About this deal

Because of the time of year, there is a bit of a fireworks theme and 4dn and 9dn don’t rhyme, as in the past, but are related in their subject matter. I could not understand the symbol in 1a and could barely read it on my small phone screen, so that did not help me. All the Across solutions consisted of two words with one or more letters in common entered in such a way that the two words run into each other.

The erne is commonly seen flying in the corners of American crosswords where the setter has backed himself in, so all I needed was the definition on that one.I found this difficult – it took me more than double what I normally reckon to take on a more challenging Everyman and twice my time for Boatman’s prize, which I completed straight after! The pairs of words are clued in such a way that the definition part relates to the full word, but the cryptic indication relates only to the part not involved in the collision, i. I mush prefer the fermented bean curd, Chau, which tastes of blue cheese and the Vietnamese use as a dip. Some of Britain's top crossword compilers have set for the series under the Everyman name, not least the current setter, who has been challenging the nation for more than ten years.

A trickier than usual Everyman but not so much so that it would cause too many problems, as there are lots of anagrams and primary letters etc.

My moan at 6dn about the fact that it’s a CD is a voice crying in the wilderness: lots of people, including some good setters, like them. Feel free to comment on any of the posts on this blog but comments may be moderated; anonymous comments and any considered by me to be vexatious and/or abusive and/or defamatory will not be accepted.I couldn’t work out the link to 2D for ERNE – it had to be that from the crossers and definition…so thanks for the explanation(s) above. Maybe they deliberately want to put up little barriers to entry, just high enough to keep the submission pool small and mostly local.
