About this deal

You can't fight him (even hitting him with the silver arrow is a Luck roll), you can't outwit him, his only dialogue is a cringeworthy "Mwahaha"-type outburst - once you meet him, you simply do what you've been teed up to do. So you've trawled all the way through the book to find you have a totally random 2 in 3 chance of failing for no fault of your own. Unfortunately, when we got to the tattooist we were ONE GOLD SHORT of affording the white unicorn in a yellow sun forehead tattoo we needed to carry forward.

What follows is a series of challenges as the player must locate certain key items, escape Port Blacksand and eventually confront Bone. Port Blacksand, the titular city of thieves, is a fascinating place for exploration and skullduggery. The full-page illustrations in the book were accompanied with a caption giving a short extract from the text. It's like reading a book from the Choose Your Own Adventure series, but you have to fight villains by rolling 2 regular dice and find hidden objects in the story. Totally loved the atmosphere and setting of Port Blacksand, twists and storyline were really good ones too, and this thrilling rogue-style adventure gave me hours and hours of fun, with a massive deaths count of 10-15 because I tried to finish it without cheating or using easy to find internet solutions and walkthroughs . Hired by a desperate mayor, the player must as the adventurer journey to the dangerous city-state of Port Blacksand (the titular "City of Thieves"), and find the wizard Nicodemus, who apparently knows of Bone's one weakness. Stopping in at a local clairvoyant (who, in FF books, are legitimately able to see the future, and not simply hucksters skilled in cold reading like they are in real-life), I was told that it’d be useful to look under the nearby bridge for Nicodemus.By all accounts things get pretty difficult in the second half, but unfortunately we never made it that far, failing to acquire all the needed items before we left the city. It was now my firm opinion that Candle Street is the Arkham Asylum of Port Blacksand, so I promised never to go back there again, and instead walked in the opposite direction as fast as I could. It's well-written, atmospheric, tense, and sufficiently difficult without falling into frustrating or cheating. One of the interesting things is that these books tend to be very black and white, particularly with the fantasy ones.
