I like the characters, I like the mythology of this world. I especially like that the two main characters are women and very different from each other. Roy for the setting. The tale takes place in the college town of Edgewood at a bookstore called Night Owls. Roy offered an engaging tale with a motley crew of supernatural and human characters. Mini review: With a new supernatural creature and interesting characters, it holds the promise of an exciting new series. Over the past 40 years, author Dr. Heimo Mikkola, has traveled to 128 countries to journal all 249 species of owls. Which is odd, because this book is also pretty involved with several well developed characters who are interesting and nuanced, more than a few difficult and fuzzy situation and a decent plot that draws all of them together. Such books tend to be deep or interesting or fascinating or exciting – but they don’t tend to be fun. They don’t usually have the lightness to them to be fun. While I largely enjoyed most of the book, I did have some trouble connecting to a few of the characters. Elly was the hardest for me to connect to, and I found myself not enjoying the chapters from her point of view as much as I enjoyed chapters from Val or Chaz’s point of view. While we learn a lot about Elly’s past, I just could never get a feel for her character, other than she’s had a hard life and isn’t very good socially. Chaz and Val, on the other hand, were much easier for me to connect to, and I loved their chapters. I loved seeing how their relationship as vampire and Renfield works. There is a lot of unspoken emotion between them, and I can’t wait for the day that it all comes out. Of the other characters who don’t act as narrators, I’m most interested in Justin. He goes through a lot of changes in this book, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how he adjusts.

Amazingly, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is an art book! I haven’t read too many art books, but I have enjoyed basically every one I have read. This particular book features two contrasting art styles: graffiti and dead body / anatomy drawing. I loved this because normally, art books take the typical painting or sketching. The Anatomical Shape of a Heart takes on a type of art that I didn’t know existed, making this book extremely unique and enjoyable. Val is a vampire, running her bookshop with Chaz, her Renfield and living a normal life – very normal, away from all the messiness of vampire politics or of her past A few reviewers said that the book includes nice pictures but wasn’t informative enough or long enough.I’m sorry,” she said after a while. Night Owls by Lauren M. Roy is a new urban fantasy series starring a new take on werewolves (adding in some creepy zombie elements), a couple of awesome heroines, solid friendships and sibling bonds, and an all-around intriguing new world! Night Owls borrows from more traditional fantasy in that it has several characters who all tell the story through multiple points of view, making it a well-rounded book with primary and secondary characters with surprising depth. I’m generally a bit stingy when it comes to urban fantasy since I’m such a fan girl of my favorite series, but Night Owls has managed to convince me to add another UF series to my must-read list! Beatrix's character was downright irritating at certain points and i find her to be very immature and harsh to the people that she loves. For a person who is written off as logical and kind of unemotional, that was certainly not the case in the book and there were moments that I had to physically restraint myself from slapping my forehead. This book is loaded with over 750 diverse photographs that are used to help inform the reader about owls. Owls of the World: A Photographic Guide was written by the world’s most notable owl expert, Heimo Mikkola. Dr. Mikkola is associated with the University of Eastern Finland, Helsinki, and is known for having traveled across 128 different countries over the past 40 years, journaling on all 249 species of owls. This book summarizes his findings, with all the complex details penned down as simply as possible. Therefore, while this may be a tedious read for some, it’s the most well-structured book for an avid owl enthusiast. Just promise me one thing,” he continued. “If it’s not good, tell me. This book stays true to the UF format in that it doesn't involve a romance. There is plenty of action surrounding a solid group of likable characters. I enjoyed the book despite a having a few issues and I can say that I will definitely be continuing this series.

Shifting to flexible working hours as a result of the coronavirus pandemic has been a revelation for publicist Mayah Riaz. She has always known she preferred to work in the evening, but previously stopped herself from doing so because she worried about being perceived as immature or a workaholic. Overall, this is a promising first book in a series, filled with action and moments of humor. The issues I had were not enough to make me want to give up on the series. In fact, the way it ended left me very curious to see what’s going to happen in the next book. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Lauren M. Roy has to offer! We’re brainwashed to believe that early birds are happier, more successful, more disciplined and all-round better human beings than night owls. The hours when I feel most alive are considered ‘ungodly’ and likened to a vampire’s schedule. Owls like myself internalise this message, and we believe we must be lazy, depressed and irresponsible.” Espie has treated night owls who want to adapt their sleeping patterns. The Enigma of the Owl is one of the few very detailed yet captivating books on owls. Mike Unwin wrote the book with unique photographs by David Tipling. Mike Unwin has studied the birds for years and describes the behavior, breeding patterns, diet, and cultural superstitions of various owl species. This story is told in shifting third person narratives. I didn't have trouble between the view points and the change in voice, but I think it would have been better to tell the story in first person narrative. NIGHT OWLS has a fairly expansive cast. There's Valerie, the vampire bookstore owner, and her Renfield and another bookstore employee. There's Elly, a Creep-hunter out to avenge her mentor, and her estranged brother. (And a few allies.) You see, in the world of NIGHT OWLS there's more than one kind of human-eating monster. The Creeps are dying off, but they might've found a way to reproduce. It's up to the five good guys and their friends to stop them. Call me Helen. If things are as bad as I think they are, we may as well dispense with the formalities.” Did you know that nesting habits differ from owl species to species? Or that they rip right through the flesh of their prey while stabbing it to death with their sharp beak? Gail Gibbons taps into things we don’t know about an owl’s nocturnal lifestyle in this nonfiction picture book. The author covers their habitat, birth and development, the threats and predators they face, and their diet. More specifically, this book dives into how different species of owls differ from one another via detailed illustrations and appealing infographics for children.I did feel a bit disconnected from the book, because for some reason, I was expecting Val to be the only main character. Once I realized that Val and Elly are BOTH main characters, the book gelled for me. Aside from Val and Elly, there are a couple of other characters, but they were all developed enough to feel unique. I particularly enjoyed Sunny and Lia, and I’d sort of like a novella about the two of them. This doesn’t necessarily mean that night owls can easily adjust. Many think that the ideal solution for night owls is to find work that better suits their natural rhythm. For some, this may be shift work, while others opt for flexible employment, such as setting up their own business or freelancing. I did *not* like the inclusion of the old virginity-means-purity trope. It wasn't *too* bad here, and was applied equally to both guys and gals, and didn't come with a side of shaming people who have sex, but it was still there in a way that left kind of a bad taste in my mouth.
