About this deal

Industry - Build a city within a specified distance of a space you own on the slot's terrain or lower, or build one of the currently available Wonders. The numerical value of the slot contributes towards Production. As we all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing, it can be difficult to fill out the player count for our favorite board games. This new reality sparked a discussion in the Fantasy Flight Games “digital office” about which of our non-cooperative games might be best suited to being played solo! Since I had recently designed the upcoming Terra Incognita expansion, Civilization: A New Dawn came to mind quite naturally. A player’s turn consists of choosing a card from their focus row and resolving its effect. Play then moves on to the next player. The five cards act as follows: Many of the game’s tasks will provide an additional supply of Trade Goods tokens. These are used to bolster effects from a player’s action cards. Players who are doing well in the game will often have multiple cards with Trade Goods on them. The barbarian phase is always the first thing to resolve. An event dial is moved around one slot and, if needed, a dice is thrown to determine the movement direction of the marauders. Any conflict or fallout must be resolved before you can proceed with your card choice.

As an opponent, the AP is predictable—you can always see what it will do on its next turn and any number of turns down the line. In spite of its predictability, or perhaps even because of it, the AP proves to be a compelling opponent because it presents the human player with a puzzle to solve, a puzzle that is not unlike playing against a human opponent. For example, you might know that the AP is going to take that prime city space on its next turn, but you are still left with a decision about whether to settle that spot first, forcing the AP to settle elsewhere, or let them take the spot and upgrade your military focus card so you can take the newly-settled city by force—or any number of other choices!

The Ideal Foundation

If you made it this far and played the base game, you probably have some questions about the pacing or quality of life. These were also my concerns when I read about the many changes. Place 2 control tokens on spaces matching this slot's terrain or lower that are adjacent to friendly spaces. Then, for each of your mature cities, place 1 trade token from the supply on 1 of your focus cards. As mentioned before, the artwork and design is great, with time and effort being put into making this feel like a tribute to its gaming ancestor from the 90s. Having eight different races to guide through the ages adds variety each time you play and the unique focus card play system is refreshing. The tech dial upgrades give you the sense of improving your choices as you progress too. Once you’ve grasped the basics, you spend minimal time browsing the rule book looking for clarification on things, so again another plus. Designing board games is a challenging business. It has the same risk as movie production, albeit at a dramatically smaller scale. However, the need to meet the demands of a taste-specific audience while also attracting a larger audience is still at the core of some types of game design, especially when dealing with an existing piece of intellectual property (IP).

Terra Mystica is an interesting but worthwhile addition to our list. It’s by far one of the best civilization board games, drawing on the theme heavily, but spinning it in its own unique way for even better results. Players will seek to establish control over swathes of land, advance technologies as one of the many fantastic factions and join cults to solidify their power. The game takes a more militaristic and confrontational dimension with the addition of the Wars and Disasters expansion which will have you marshal armies into battle and bring the fist down on your opponent without detracting from the original. The base game is played by 1-6 players in 90-120 minutes and is suitable for ages 12+ As well as allowing for a single-player mode, the automated player rules can be used to fill a seat in multiplayer games with up to three other players. Then, for each army on your military card, you may place that army in a space containing one of your cities.Science - Move the pointer on your Tech Dial a number of spaces equivalent to the numerical value of the slot the Science card is in when played. By moving the Tech Dial, you can gain access to more powerful versions of the Focus Cards. Move each of your caravans up to 4 spaces. They can move into spaces matching this slot's terrain or lower. The big appeal for me with Civilization: A New Dawn was having this style of game that can be played in a good time frame, as some other similar games can feel very content heavy and bog you down, which normally results in endless hours spent hunched over a table for a game session. A big pull for A New Dawn is the player action system. You have five terrain slots with a focus card under each, ranging from the first slot as the weakest to the fifth being strongest. You select an action from a focus card in front of you and once it’s played, that card is moved into the first slot and the rest are shuffled up one place.

Define Your Civilization

By advancing their culture, science, economy, industry, and military, rulers can ensure their nation’s survival through the ages. However, true leaders want their civilization to not only survive, but thrive by advancing their pursuits and completing agendas. To become the supreme world power, a player must complete at least one agenda on each victory card presented at the beginning of the game. At the start of the first player’s turn, if a player has completed one agenda on each victory card, that player wins and ensures that their civilization will continue to flourish.
