The D7500 works superbly for eye-level shooting, but is less satisfactory in Live View. Image credit: Andy Westlake Switch to Live View, however, and it’s a very different story. Nikon is still using a rather basic contrast-detection system, and it’s painfully slow compared to mirrorless cameras or Canon’s Dual Pixel AF system. It’s okay for static subjects, but don’t even think about using it for anything that moves – indeed, Nikon doesn’t even bother offering an AF-C mode.

Nikon has included a flat Picture Control mode designed to allow easy colour grading of your footage in post-production, and a zebra pattern display to help you avoid clipping highlight detail. UHD movie image format is an area that provides a 1.5x increase in the effective focal length of the lens in use and is reserved for 4K 3840 x 2160 recording.DX-based movie image format utilizes the full width of the DX-format sensor, and is used to record Full HD 1920 x 1080 and HD 1280 x 720 video. This setting is well-suited for shallow depth of field effects and provides the widest field of view. In-camera raw file batch processing is possible to apply a consistent set of adjustments to several files at once. The search for the perfect image can take you anywhere. Go there with the powerful, nimble, and fully connected D7500. Catch the beauty you find with flagship DX image quality inherited from Nikon’s D500. The fine detail rendition is good, but it did lag very slightly behind the results from the D7200. It’s likely that you’d only notice this in direct side-by-side comparisons, however, and the D7500’s sensor has many other qualities to commend it. Always a strong point with Nikon DSLRs, the D7500’s dynamic range is very good, even in JPEG files.

Benefitting handheld shooting, an Electronic Vibration Reduction feature can be used during Full HD and HD recording, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake across three axes to control horizontal, vertical, and rotational movements. Additionally, Active D-Lighting can also be employed during Full HD/HD shooting to preserve highlight and shadow detail when working in high-contrast situations. Below the viewfinder is the 3.2in 922k-dot LCD, which is an impressively slim unit that tilts up and down while adding little to the depth of the camera. To be honest, I’d have preferred a fully articulated design as seen on the D5600 or Canon EOS 90D, since tilt-only screens are useless when shooting in portrait format. On the outside, the D7500 sports a carbon-fibre body rather than metal alloy, though it feels plenty sturdy enough nonetheless and it isweather-sealed. It has a tilting touchscreen display on the rear, andit’s the first Nikon DSLR with built-in support for Nikon’s new radio-controlled Advanced Creative Lighting System. There’s only one SD card slot, which is a bit of a surprise given that the cameras on either side in the Nikon range have two. As on the D500, omitting the low-pass filter enabled Nikon to eke out that bit more detail from the 20.9MP sensor, and while it may seem quite a sacrifice to lose almost 4MP compared to the D7200's 24.2MP, the minor drop in resolution does have advantages, particularly when it comes to sensitivity.The D5600 is a capable, easy to use DSLR with features such as its 24MpP sensor, vari-angle screen and small size making an attractive, more affordable, alternative to the 20MpP D7500. The Nikon D7500 boasts excellent image quality with accurate colours and exposures. An improved ISO range helps things along nicely, resulting in successful low-light shooting. Budding professionals can test their studio shooting out with good effect too, with positive results to report from studio shooting, with good colour balance and shadows.

A hot shoe can also be used in conjunction with an optional external Speedlight, and, if used with the optional WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller, the camera can control up to three groups of SB-5000 Speedlights via radio. Nikon has boldly opted for a slight drop down to 20.9 megapixels, but fine detail remains very crisp. This isn’t a cheap DSLR, even now, but the specs are very tempting. They start with the continuous shooting speed of 8fps, which is a little short of the 10fps and more achieved by top APS-C DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, but still enough for capturing most high-speed action. The touchscreen tilts up and down and has a resolution of 922k dots, slightly down on some current rivals.

Lighting Accessories

Interestingly, it's the Pentax KP that wins out here, with the Nikon D7500 and Fujifilm X-T30 in second place. It's worth drawing attention to the Pentax KP's overall performance in our lab tests. It's not a major brand any more and the lens support may be a bit patchy, but Pentax still makes some very good cameras.
