But once my older kids were in high school, working on history independently using Notgrass curriculum, I still had a middle schooler or two plus our youngest was in early elementary. So, we transitioned to doing history altogether and my middle and high schoolers worked on it independently while I started MOH Volume 1 with my youngest on her own. A total of 90 lessons are included; divided into chronological sections, each section contains 15 regular lessons and 3 challenge lessons. Depending on how much science you wish to teach in your homeschool, there are enough lessons to cover every other day for the length of a school year, or, you can finish the book by only doing two lessons a week (and skipping the challenge lessons).

This is another product from the folk at Bright Ideas Press to go along with each volume of Mystery of History. Very similar in nature to lap book pieces, these are folder books to accompany each lesson in the MOH volumes.In Volume 2, the textbook has 84 lessons spread out over 28 weeks in addition to the activities, quizzes, exercises, pre-tests, and tests (in the first edition). Author Susan Wise Bauer writes with an engaging narrative style that depicts the old way of passing on oral history. She loves to dive into interesting tad-bits about famous people and average people alike so you can be immersed in the story. Her books do not read like a traditional textbook at all, and I would categorize SOTW as more of a living book than even MOH. Week 35: Lessons 103-105: Jesus Christ: His Birth, Jesus: His Teaching and Miracles, and Tiberius Caesar, Pilate, and Herod In the second volume, the biblical chronology concludes after the first few weeks of the course. There are 28 weeks' worth of lessons. This is fewer lessons than in Volume I, but each lesson has more content.Volume 3 Timeline Figures – You will continue to find a Christian perspective with the third volume. These timeline figures include Columbus, Da Vinci, and Cortez.

If you are teaching several different ages at once Mystery of History (or Sonlight) is an excellent choice. My favorite time of the homeschool day was when we learned together as a family. History was the easiest to combine ages. MOH companion guides make it simple. Read together and do the age level activities for each child or make the activities a group project. I enjoyed learning along with my children and I know you will too with Mystery of History. A9 already enjoys listening to these audio CDs before falling asleep. However, I thought it might be handy to also use them during lesson time. The girls can do some colouring while listening, and this frees me up to get the activities ready. Week 12: Lessons 34-36: The Phoenicians, The Kingdom of Israel Divides, and Elijah the Fiery ProphetWeek 30: Lessons 88-90: Emperor Asoka of India, the Septuagint and the Colossus of Rhodes, and The Qin (Ch’in) Dynasty Volume 1 Book List – This list includes wonderful books about ancient times. These books correspond to what you’re learning about in volume i. Volume I has lessons for 36 weeks. It relies heavily on scripture since the Bible is a source for much of what we know about ancient times. Other than that, the historical information is all presented within this book as it would be in a textbook. Aside from the atlases or WonderMaps, no other reference works are required for this study unless older students are pursuing research activities.

Additionally, kids 12 and up are going through the Creation Apologetics Master Class from Answers in Genesis. And it just so happens that my youngest kids are taking a similar course for children at church each Wednesday nights. The Bible Project videos are a fun extra for helping to review/understand each book of the Bible. I use the Child’s Story Bible by Catherine Vos for my youngest.Mystery of History has done the work for you by providing supplemental activities in the companion guides for each lesson. You don’t need to revise it to meet your child’s learning level.
