The actual book, I hasten to add, is considerably less earnest than my review and has amusing illustrations. That being said I've forgotten quite a bit about what it was even about, and on rereading it I know why.

A fat boy and a thin boy, brothers, go into the countryside one day and find a gap between two rocks which they climb into and find a moving staircase that takes them deep into the earth.I would also check out: How to Live Forever (though that is more for 2-6 years) by Colin Thompson, The House That Sailed Away by Pat Hutchins and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster(all of which I have also reviewed).

Sadly there are no jokes about lean manufacturing, but the old line about generals always preparing to re-fight the last war is deployed in a kind of Maginot line situation the full figures of the Fattypuffs mean they cannot swiftly get out from their special curved trenches, but as can be the case defeat in war allows for victory in defeat. In a body concious age where war is still prevalent it has an excellent message and can be enjoyed on numerous levels by readers of many different ages. Was trying (and failing) to come up with the title recently, but just now a Goodreads friend has happened to "like" a review of what must certainly be the correct book. If you are a parent/adult fretting about a girl who is only 10 but who reads Cosmo during morning "playtime" and can quote Bridget Jones/Marian Keyes/Sophie Kinsella verbatim and who is already talking about diets and thighmasters at age 7, then I would read this. Edmund and Terry find the entrance through the Twin Rock, where a long escalator descends into the bowels of the earth.Whether you are a jolly Fattypuff or a driven Thinifer you’ll be rooting for the brothers to bring peace to the countries under the Earth. King Plumpapuff of the Fattypuffs is made constitutional sovereign, while the Thinifer president is made his chancellor. The Thinifers are hectic, eat to live types, who manufacture thin things like wire and spaghetti, while their rivals the Fattypuffs are expansive and have an economy based around the production of rounded and full figured objects like sausages and tyres. As it points out in an introduction that I think has been added since I used to read it as a child, this book also has some strong points to make about tolerance which are very important in this troubled world.
