I don’t even know why I wrote a guide to slipping before I wrote one on basic boxing defense. I’ll do what I can to make readers happy but I’m afraid of what it will do to beginner level boxers. I can already imagine legions of Mike Tyson hopefuls skipping over basic defense lessons and other boxers rolling their eyes at me for teaching advanced boxing to people who’ve never stepped foot in a ring.

Slipping is much easier when you know what your opponent is going to throw. Study him and see how he likes to follow his punches (your trainer can help you with this). Throw some feints and move in and out to test him. At the same time, you are hiding your pattern and staying unpredictable. Don’t keep slipping the same way each time or else he’ll anticipate and nail you with a big counterpunch. Now when use your head movements, timing will become an important factor. Your movements have to be calm and collected, not rapid and jerky. At this point, you’ve fully slipped your opponent’s punch and you should be able to put out a crossover jab over their arm, or an uppercut from below to their body.The last mistake is letting the bag hit your shoulders repeatedly. This means you’re getting lazy in bending your knees and staying in your boxer’s stance. Why Should You Learn To Use The Slip Bag? Once you internalize the rhythm of the bag, then you can start to mix up your combinations and footwork. In some cases, it’s impossible to penetrate a fighter with a very tight defense. Your opponent will never be open except for when he’s punching, so slipping is the only way to overcome his defense. By learning how to slip, you are creating opportunities to counter-punch that might not have otherwise been present. When you’re in a boxing stance and bent at the knees, the bag should be in between your forehead and your line of vision. Choose which arm to jab or uppercut with based on your opponent’s body positioning. If you have a clear crossover shot, you will likely jab with the same arm your opponent did, as it will “cross over” their arm.

Another mistake is slipping too fast with no rhythm. You may have seen Mike Tyson work eight slips at lightning speed. Once you get the footwork and basic movements down, you can add punches as you come out of some/all of the weaves to make it more complex and fun. Once you’re done with pivoting, move a bit closer to the opponent by stepping towards them as you’re throwing the punch. If you tend to throw the punch with your right hand, your left hand should come forward as well. By doing so, you’ll be able to maintain your head at a safe distance from your opponent. When you fully slip the punch, hit a crossover jab over the arm or attempt an uppercut from below. The biggest advantage of slipping inside is that you can catch your opponent while moving upwards. Since your opponent’s head in next to your head, your opponent will have a hard time protecting his/her face and body.If you have an opportunity to give your opponent an uppercut jab, use whichever arm is the closest or would be coming from the most effective angle.
