One of my favourite parts was the illustrations that came with the book which made me fall in love with the characters all over again (and grin like a fool when it showed Cardan obsessing over Jude being a mortal).

Even the part set after Queen of Nothing doesn’t have enough of them together, but he does try to outwit and outplan her. You get to, finally, see the world through the eyes of the infamous ‘cruel prince’ and get a glimpse into how his mind works. Because, to me, if you’re just writing the story again but from a different characters perspective then you probably should have just included their point of view in the original story rather than just rewriting the story again.

He is a Cruel Prince because he has been raised up in it, instructed in its nuances, honed through its application.I was already in love with her and her art because of her work with The Wayward Children series, but this entire book feels like am immersive work of art. It’s definitely worth paying a little extra to own a hardback edition of the book as it’s absolutely stunning. Black's stark, eerie tone; propulsive pacing; and fulsome world building will certainly delight her legion of fans. Although not pivotal to the main plot and story it gives it an edge that it didn’t have before reading this.

Hatred for Dain; for his father; for all the siblings who didn’t take him in and the one who did; for his mother, who spat at his feet as she was led away; for stupid, disgusting mortals; for all of Elfhame and everyone in it. Naturally it was marvellously written and portrayed the fae in a wonderful manner which merged their beauty and wickedness superbly. As of now, I've read four books by Holly Black and every single time I'm left amazed, not by the plot twists (although we all know that she excels at them), I'm left amazed by her writing. Yeah, sure, I knew it was going to be about younger Cardan, but I really was anticipating more of his interactions with Jude in this.I also liked getting to know just what happened for the relationship to end and why Cardan stopped caring for her.

And how this lead to him liking human tales, being surprised by their imaginations, and collecting more human books.A rare second volume that surpasses the first, with, happily, more intrigue and passion still to come. Black continues to build an ever expanding mythos with her Faerie stories, and while this volume requires prior knowledge of The Folk of the Air trilogy, it offers new delights along with familiar moments retold. Plus there’s his romantic relationship with Nicasia and how he tries to convince himself that he could rule with her in the Undersea.
