The numerous comments from the townsfolk of Plainfield, Wisconsin, who generally said the same thing: he was a quiet fellow, shocking to discover, etc. But the readers spoke and the Goon quickly became an indy hit and picked up a diehard cult following. He murdered two women (though it’s likely the number is much higher) and robbed the graves of several other recently-deceased elderly women so that he could flay the corpses, turn the skin to turn into clothes and wear it so that he could “be” a woman/his mother. While Schechter and Powell necessarily spend plenty of time on Gein, they don't dwell sensationally on the horrors of his crimes but turn their attention to his impact not only on the culture but, importantly, on the lives of his neighbors.

The narrative is told in such a way that this book became hard to put down and the artwork is reflective of the disturbing subject matter without sensationalizing the violence done to the victims.The few times we see Ed’s fantasy world, Powell uses harder lines and not as much shading (plus there’s a fun homage in there that I saw and was glad it was deliberate), which makes it clear that the reality inside Gein’s head was the place he wanted to be. You can have all of the facts short of the omnipotence of God, but you can never actually solve anything. Powell does such a good job making Plainfield just a dull little farming town in the middle of nowhere, and all the people seem nice (although we know that just because they’re “boring” doesn’t make them “nice”), so Gein’s crimes have a huge impact on them, and Powell shows that well. With this graphic novel, Schechter and Powell have painstakingly brought into focus Gein as a character, right from his childhood beginnings to his demise. So many stories have been based on Gein and they’re each disturbing in their own right but you can’t get more disturbed than the original.

Particularly striking is the comic-book style of Gein as priest of his religion, as he might have thought of himself in his head, juxtaposed instantly on the next page with the gruesome reality of what he likely looked like. In terms of how Schechter tackles the story of Ed Gein, from childhood to murders, I thought that he did a pretty good, comprehensive job. Of course, Ed Gein – lonely, battered, pathetic, almost pitiable, working his dark craft in an empty house on a frigid plain in central Wisconsin – was no Charlie Manson. It would be easy to dismiss the problem as non-existent, as too mired in the impossibility of reaching a clear answer. The comic aspect doesn’t enhance it, per se, but the overview is comprehensive without succumbing to exploitation or bad taste.
