This is a prequel into the man behind the mask and that led him on towards his dark path to alleged tyranny and all round super genius of science. There are other characters we’ve seen in Doom’s circle over the years that make appearances, but those seem to be really deep cuts. Roger is just an ordinary boy, in an ordinary world – or so he thinks, until a grumpy dwarf warrior, Mossbelly MacFearsome, appears out of thin air and saves him from the school bully. We get to see a lot of his early motivations and desires that lead him to becoming the powerful ruler everyone knows him as in the Marvel Universe. When the Doombot revealed his visage to the reporter, I briefly thought Brubaker and the artist Pablo Raimondo were trying to convey that Doom had become a cyborg and was purging himself of his human side, literally, by replacing the flesh with machinery.Like most Marvel villains Doom is complex and isn’t inherently evil he’s doing what he thinks is best, he’s not nearly as sympathetic as a character like Magneto but he’s not pure evil like the Red Skull. As it wasn’t reprinted to coincide with Doom’s major role in Secret Wars, it seems the digital package is your best bet. This graphic novel relates the history of Doctor Doom from his childhood through his taking of the throne of Latveria.

I also wouldnt mind future mini series by him, featuring various other FF rogues (Mole Man, Mad Thinker, The Wizard, etc. So probably my favorite run on a comic ever was John Byrne's run on The Fantastic Four in the 1980s.but I just didn't connect with it enough to rank it higher than that, and the art didn't blow me away. From his earliest disasters to his scientific triumphs to the tragedy of the fractured man he would become, this is the story you know, and the one that you don’t. This origins story felt surface-level especially when one considers the substantial source material when it comes to Doom's backstory. In fact a lot is not explained here, like all the resources Doom had in his gypsy caravan, to the “Baron”, to Tibet, to pretty much everything.

But by the end of the story, you realize exactly why Doom would be so open to his life story with this person that youll' definitely not want to miss reading out in about and because of this He has the same over-the-top high-and-mighty speech patterns, the same florid melodramatic way with words in threats that any other high and mighty super villian has it's just that he uses a lot more clearer in exclamation points for getting his point out across to others lot clearer. It was Doom’s mother that introduced him to the use of mystical powers, but she traded her soul to Mephisto for the use of it. However, the rest of the art is pretty sloppy, with poor proportions and veritably weak facial features littering the book. Loved this Keith Haring toy, it engrossed my 4 year old just as much as it fascinated me - hours of fun, and it looks so good too. I see a rise in Fantastic Four popularity coming with Hickman’s run and Millar’s run about to be all out on trade, and it never hurts to have a couple books on your shelf to show off to people as they come over and ask you just who the Fantastic Four really are.One day, some of the Baron's soldiers came for Victor's father, asking him to use his knowledge of medicine to try and cure the Baron's dying wife. Truly a disquieting experience as you read on through Ed Brubaker's words as he puts color into one of the most mysterious characters in comics. The way Brubaker explains and makes the doombot oblivious that Doom succeded in freeing his mother's soul (with Dr Strange) almost help to localize in Doom's timeline the creation of this doombot.

We all learned about Doom's ominous presence, and this book justified just that all the while making it a very engaging story. I think Ed Brubaker succeeded in what he set out to do, which is to craft a story that would stick to the basics but at the same time seem fresh to those of us fans who know the story so well or those not so familiar. I finished two other Doom mini-series before getting to this one (the second apparently was never collected and was as bad as the first, both written by Chuck Dixon). The Slings and Arrows Graphic Novel Guide doesn't care where you've been, where you're going or where you're located.I expected a straight-forward narration of the story in this book, so the documentary style was an interesting surprise. If Roger doesn’t help Moss, the world as we know it will be destroyed by ogres and dragons and the race of humans will be annihilated. The art of a book has a lot to do with how one enjoys the book, and if it was going to look like this I wanted no part of it.
