About this deal

Korg’s two new Nano Studio edition controllers expand on the existing NanoKeys 2 and NanoKontrol 2 in both size and functionality. In stand-alone MIDI mode you can use the supplied Korg Kontrol Editor to set up five layers of assignments of Note or CC messages. The dedicated utility "Bluetooth MIDI Connect for Mac" allows fast and simple wireless connection between your Mac and KORG Bluetooth enabled keyboard (such as the nanoSTUDIO series and microKEY Air).

Although designed to offer seamless wireless operation the nanoKEYS can also be connected via USB to a range of computers and devices. Maybe it’s amazing craftsmanship, but it could also be fear of disappointing my wife who got me the OP1 for christmas. I have a studio with several big keyboards and controllers, but need an iPad keyboard for the instant idea capture, for the couch, and trips in the woods/beach. You can adjust the velocity curve of the keyboard, and customise the MIDI messages that are assigned to the pads and knobs to meet your needs. I couldn’t find a way to use the Kontrol with GarageBand, which is probably the most widely used iOS music package. With a simple, refined, and stylish design, along with beautiful lighting with white LEDs, someone won’t get tired of using it every day.The nanoKey Studio includes 25 of the same velocity-sensitive, backlit keys as its predecessors, which is a love/hate thing, depending on your needs.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before someone shares some Kontrol Editor maps for use with different apps. You can also assign the pads to trigger audio clips and samples which is great for on-the-fly performances.These days it comes as a surprise when there isn’t a dedicated device profile for Live that would allow for automatic setup and dynamic control mapping. The Cubase, Live, Studio One, Sonar and Digital Performer modes are all essentially Mackie Control emulations, and there’s a Pro Tools mode that uses the HUI protocol. It's easy to connect to an iPad/iPhone music app such as KORG Gadget or Apple GarageBand, or to your Mac/Windows music production software.

The other main physical differences are the jog wheel and a Scene button, which toggles the whole surface through five separate controller assignment pages when used in stand-alone MIDI mode. The more generic nature of the NanoKey Studio made it a lot more widely usable on my iPad than the Kontrol.
