The question is, of course, whether it’s a viable alternative to the Surface Pro. Chuwi UBook Pro review: What you need to know The Surface brand is desirable, and thanks to the Surface Go 3, it's no longer out of reach for folks on tighter budgets. Any model is easily a match for most affordable laptops, with the bonus of a touchscreen with inking support. Inking is an essential tool because the size of the Surface Go 3 makes it a truly spectacular digital notebook. This is primarily a detachable laptop to be used on a desk (or flat surface) which means that it is an awkward experience should you want to use it on your lap. It simply doesn’t feel right for a number of reasons. Another thing that’s common to Core m systems is that the integrated Intel HD 615 GPU puts a real restriction on gaming. It can run less demanding 3D games like Counter-Strike at around 30fps, but you’ll have to turn the resolution down to 1,280 x 720, and set all the detail options to ‘Low’. When I tried turning up the detail levels and resolution, I was left chugging along at an unplayable 13fps.

Battery life is a cause for concern as we managed only three hours and 37 minutes on our tests (running a Youtube video with all power management features switched off and brightness set to maximum). We would have preferred to have the DC port located nearer to the bottom of the tablet. Having it at the very top put extra pressure on the cable connector.

Speakers live on the inside edges of the tablet, covered by the stand when not deployed. They're not as muffled as you might imagine with the stand over top, but there is a small difference. In any case, audio doesn't get very loud, and holding the tablet on its sides will often further muffle the audio. The speakers get the job done, but they're nothing to get excited about. The Chuwi Ubook Pro is a thoroughly enjoyable product which can be sourced for far less than the Surface models. It is well designed, well kitted and despite some philosophical differences, it will definitely appeal to those looking for a cheaper-yet-capable alternative to the Microsoft Surface range. There are some small issues with the battery life and with the arrangement of the power port but other than that, the Chuwi Pro should definitely be on the short list. When it comes to benchmarks, the numbers tell a story of two parts; the processor handles most productivity tasks well unless you want to game on it which is a no-no. The GPU is far too slow for most modern games but will deal with everything else without issue. Each individual user of uBook will have the benefit of the most reliable and trusted service in Aberdeen. For anyone looking to land a Windows tablet for casual use, Chuwi's UBook Pro is easy to recommend. It's more affordable than a lot of other options out there, it delivers useful ports, and the display is well above average, especially in terms of brightness. It's not going to win any races with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 configurations, but the Core m3 version I tested handled lightweight productivity work without complaint. It works with an active pen as well, making it great for jotting down notes and sketching out ideas.An overabundance of brightness was also unexpected. You should have no issues working in well-lit spaces despite the glossy finish thanks to nearly 500 nits brightness when maxed out. This review unit came with Chuwi's HiPen H5, though if you're buying the tablet, you'll likely see the newer HiPen H6 advertised with it. The latter pen delivers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity (compared to the H5 pen's 1,024 levels) and has two buttons on the side, making it better cut out for artistic work.
