About this deal

REPLAY is created by theatre director Ruby Thompson, designer Rūta Irbīte and writer and composer Sam Caseley. Creating Replay has been an adventure different from anything I've done before. It unites in a new way three crafts and lifelong passions that have animated my work: storytelling, visual art, and history.

I think that one of the reasons I avoided reading this for so long is that it is saddled under the unfortunate umbrella of time travel fiction. Often this means a lot of obtuse descriptions of quantum mechanics and the paradoxes of accidentally meeting yourself in the past; Time Travel 101, if you will. Fortunately, Grimwood plays upon the well-worn theme with a unique twist. Written over 30 years ago, Replay feels very familiar, to the point that I read portions and wondered if I had read the book when it first came out. Many of the ideas and beats in this story can be found in later time-loop fictional works—using knowledge of the past to make money, to try to stop some past tragedy, or to find a more satisfying partner after a failed marriage in the original timeline. During one subsequent replay, Jeff takes notice of a highly acclaimed film, Starsea, that has become a huge success at the box office in 1974. The film is written and produced by an unknown filmmaker, Pamela Phillips, who has recruited Steven Spielberg to direct and George Lucas as a special effects supervisor, before the two shot to stardom with their own projects. Because the film did not exist in previous replays, Jeff suspects that Pamela is also experiencing the same phenomenon. He locates her and asks her questions about future films which only a fellow replayer would know, confirming his suspicions. The author does a great job of illuminating the main character's inner dialog and questions about his predicament. At each point in the novel, the protagonist responds to his situation sensibly and/or understandably, demonstrating smarts, will-power, perseverance, and human fallibility (his patience can and does reach a limit). I liked the plot twists and turns ... at least for the first 2/3 of the book, I really had no idea WHAT was going to happen next. I was hoping it wouldn't end the way it did, simply because that's what I was guessing might happen ... but the author did keep me guessing for the majority of it, so I am mostly satisfied. I absolutely loved this Love x Love manga from TokyoPop. As of lately this publishing house has been on a role with their BL manga and GL manga, and Replay was no exception. Honestly anything this publishing house puts out I will read at this point!This is a book I will definitely reread. I definitely recommend it. This books will reach into your heart and touch it, something that all the very best books should do at some point or another. They misogyny hits you square in the face sometimes. And there's plenty of it. It would certainly never pass the Bechdel test (or similar ones).

After chasing money, fame, sex, drugs, family life, debauchery, political involvement, scientific enquiries, solitary meditation, stoic resignation, Jeff will hopefully end this quest with some answers. I recommend looking for them in the book. I found it very well written, with a fine balance between facts and emotions, intelligent and funny in turns, thought provoking without becoming preachy. Sharla knows what a man wants whether he is 43 or 18, and Jeff is a mish mash of those two ages. The older Jeff is thinking I’ve never had sex with such an uninhibited woman in my entire life, and the younger Jeff is all libido. In essence, at least for a while, those two divergent people can enjoy the benefits that Sharla is so willing to provide. When I was 19 years old ... Oy, I already sound like an old man. But that's the point. When I was 19, my dreams were even bigger than my hair, which is saying something. And it was in the midst of those dreams that I first read the novel Replay, by Ken Grimwood. If the flow of time is continuous--uninterrupted as far as the rest of the world is concerned, ignoring this loop you and I keep experiencing, and branching out from each version of the loop into new lines of reality depending on the changes we put into motion each time around--then history should have progressed twenty-five years for each replay we’ve been through.”

The next day, the uke and the coach were in the car on the way to shopping for the training camp, they drove passed the seme and an older girl walking close to S University entrance… The coach introduced uke to his friend 嶋, a professional catcher who’s retired and now teaching at N University. The catcher has watched the uke in action previously and praised his throw, said he can recommend uke to N University if he still wants to play baseball. Wow. I read this book in an afternoon. Okay, that’s not the first time I’ve done that for a book, but this was STUNNING. Sharon Creech has a way of weaving words together in a way that just pulls you in and makes you CARE. Le Figaro newspaper recently commissioned a nationwide poll asking the French to rank their favorite author: Marc Levy and Victor Hugo were #1.
