About this deal

Out of focus highlights are rendered smoothly, most likely due to the lens’ rounded aperture blade design. The axial CA removal tool in Nikon’s Capture NX2 works well, and so does the CA removal feature in Lightroom.

If I’m shooting for extreme shallow depths of field or wide angles, the Nikon 1 isn’t going to be my first choice. This lens does seem to perform a lot better at closer distances, the performance is going to deteriorate once you get closer to infinity. Just remember, you’re using a small sensor camera and that random photon noise isn’t really “fixed” by using a fast lens, so in low light you’ll still get some noise (mostly luminance). So many spectacular views appear when the light is fading—dramatic sunsets, the final inning of play, an evening stroll in the city or a warm moment around a campfire. As the light goes down this lens is not going to suddenly turn the V3 or other Nikon 1 into a low-light master.Notice the “Bridge Tender Inn” sign at the top and the “fresh fish” sign at the bottom, both have a slight curvature. You have to be prepared to do a bit of post processing, but I happen to love that part as well, so that’s no problem for me. BUT, depending on your expectations, cheap solutions such as extension tubes and achromatic lenses could be just the right thing for you. You know that movie trope where a guy who doesn’t know what he’s doing fires a machine gun and it jerks wildly in his hands and ends up stitching the ceiling with a dozen holes before he can get his finger off the trigger?
