About this deal

Now we have to get the remote into pairing mode while the camera is still in pairing mode so they can find each other. Note – the camera is in pairing mode only when its screen shows the two arrows moving towards each other.

With the remote, you can attach it to anywhere with the velcro band or wear it on your wrist. You have all the access to the functions so you can switch between different modes. And on the side is the settings/preset button and a shooting mode button. The mode button cycles through the capture mode such as video, photo, time lapse, etc. GoPro has had four different remotes for their action cameras. Two of them are current models, two is an old model but you can still find it for sale in some places, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Underwater Wifi Extension Cable. As you’d guess from the name, this isn’t wireless. But since wireless signals don’t work underwater, this is a way to control your GoPro remotely while it’s fully submerged. There are DIY ways to do this, but CamDo offers an off-the-shelf option. While I haven’t tried this product specifically yet, I’ve used other CamDo products in the past and been very impressed with them. How to Charge the Smart Remote, WiFi Remote, and Remo The GoPro Smart Remote is GoPro’s official remote accessory for GoPros that preceded the GoPro Hero 8. It’s not the oldest official remote, however, as it succeeds an even older remote called the “GoPro Wi-Fi remote”. Once again, being an official GoPro accessory, it costs slightly more than unofficial options. You basically have three options to control your GoPro cameras: on the camera itself, with a mobile app, and with a remote control. The GoPro Smart Remote is perfect for the occasions where you need to trigger the camera but you are far away and a mobile phone can be too cumbersome or might get damaged. GoPro Smart Remote The remote may ask you to pair another, press the [Mode Button] to highlight "No", then press the [Shutter Button] to select it.

Controlling multiple cameras. I haven’t tested this myself but the smart remote allows you to simultaneously control up to 50 GoPros! Alternatively, you may see the pairing screen (arrows) and the number of connected cameras (typically "1"). Press the [Shutter Button] on the Remote to complete the paring process. In terms of features, there is some overlap between the Wifi Remote and the Smart Remote. They’re both waterproof (the Wifi Remote is less waterproof, rated down to 10 feet (3 meters)), can control up to 50 cameras at once, can be used to change settings, and look very similar. But the Smart Remote has a much longer range, much better battery life, and is, in my experience, a much more reliable way to control your GoPros. I’d generally recommend getting the Smart Remote rather than the Wifi Remote. Which GoPro Remote to Use When? GoPro The Remote vs Smart Remote vs Wifi Remote vs Remo Remote If you want to control multiple cameras at once Not all GoPros support these remote controls. The HERO7 Silver and White, for instance, do connect to the mobile app but won’t let you connect a remote control. Same with the HERO (2018). And some older GoPros, in particular, won’t work with the Bluetooth connection or voice commands of the Remo. Since I originally posted this, GoPro has discontinued the Remo. I’m not particularly surprised, honestly. Several times I ran into reliability issues when using it even just as a button remote with the voice aspect. And based on reports from other users that accumulated online, I’m not the only one. So unless you really need the voice control, I’d recommend steering towards the Smart Remote over the Remo.Usability. Wearing gloves? Hands on handlebars? Using the smartphone app is next to impossible and you’re much better off with the smart remote. If they fail to connect, make sure that the camera’s wireless connection is enabled. Find this under Preferences > Connections > Wireless Connections. It’s worth noting that leaving the wireless feature enabled will contribute to some power drain of your camera’s battery. In Use Control multiple cameras: enables control of up to 50 GoPro cameras at a time – perfect for multi-cam setups. There are four buttons. On top is the power button. It’s straightforward. Just press to turn on. To turn it off, hold the button for two seconds.

If you need the remote itself to be waterproof, you’ll be wanting the The Remote, Smart Remote, or Remo. If you’re using a GoPro in damp conditions, these models are all waterproof. The remote is rated down to 16 feet (5 meters). The Smart Remote is rated down to 33 feet (10 meters), while the Remo is also rated down to 16 feet (5 meters).This model has been discontinued. Even if you do manage to find one for sale, there’s really no reason to choose it over the new The Remote or Smart Remote, and there are some good reasons not to.

Although expensive, the official GoPro “The Remote”, or smart remote for older GoPro models, are definitely my recommendations. Their native compatibility, mounting clip and superior WiFi range and waterproofing make it worth the extra money. The design closely resembles the first-generation GoPro Wi-Fi remote. It doesn’t feature a settings button like the second-generation GoPro smart remote (above), but it has all the other features including an LCD screen that displays key information. It can control multiple cameras at once. Up to 5 cameras. That’s fewer than the Smart Remote and WiFi Remote, both of which can control up to 50 cameras at once. Press the [Mode Button] repeatedly, until [SMRTRC] is highlighted, then press the [Shutter button] to select. I’ve found them most useful when doing things like kayaking or surfing, where you’re mostly above the water but getting wet is inevitable. Other Ways to Control Your GoPro RemotelyThe GoPro Smart Remote is waterproof and can be used in 600ft (180m) range! You can drop it, soak it, throw it or get i really dirty. You can also use it with up to 50 cameras at once, you probably never need that functionality but good to know you have that option. GoPro Smart Remote Features The Remote is the successor to GoPro’s existing Smart Remote, which is compatible with older cameras and offers superior specs in certain areas — it has a range of up to 600 feet (180m), it can control up to 50 cameras at a time, and it’s waterproof down to 33 feet (10m). I’m personally a bit ambivalent about the voice control, and especially with the REMO remote. I’ve had too many times when it hasn’t worked as reliably as I’d like it to and I’ve ended up having to work around it. But in those situations where voice control is important, the Remo is the only option for controlling a HERO6 or HERO5 remotely by voice. One of the key features of the Smart Remote is the ability to change settings using the remote. Third-party options and even GoPro’s previous Wi-Fi remote do not let you change settings using the remote. Though I don’t find myself using this button much, it’s definitely a neat addition. Press the [Info/Wireless Button] one more time to show the Wi-Fi menu on the camera’s front LCD screen.
