However, it is a watch that often gets compared to the Seiko SKX007. Unsurprisingly so, as the two have stark similarities when it comes to design. This is due to the fact that both are sports watches based on practically the same mould. It’s almost impossible to find a difference between the two, at least physically. However, there are still some differences that deserve the spotlight. At first, the idea was to select the best full lume dial watches from the past and the present. But during the research for this article, the scope kept getting wider as the magic of lume is not restricted to full lume dials. While there certainly is a list to be made with the best full lume dials, it would put some amazing watches that play brilliantly with the theme of light by using lume out of scope. It has been used for all sorts of outdoor activities summer and winter for years. Dived with it in Tobago and the Grenadines plus NE. Compared it with the diving computer and the depth gauge was reliable down to 32 meters – i trusted it. I actually own a blue dial promaster (NY0040-17L) which I always enjoy wearing and it has become my only go to watch everytime I head for the beach. Powering the NY0040 is a Citizen in house movement, the Miyota 8200. This is a 21 jewel movement with a 21,600 BPH which many find to be more accurate than the Seiko SKX007, although this can cause quite the debate. Strangely for me (who likes all things Panerai) the Tron takes it too far. I can just about cope with the lume on the case, but the strap? Come on.Changes and upgrades from the NY004 include the shape of the lumed indices, now straight and sharp corned instead of round. The handset is changed as well, still massive and legible, but now more straight-sided, with a sort of straight cathedral-style hand for the hours, and bold, a red-trimmed arrow for the minutes. The arrow-tipped second hand is lumed, and trimmed in red also. The colored minute hand is a great feature for a working diver’s watch, as it draws the eye immediately to the most important hand on the face- and it looks very cool above water too. While Seiko is not a bad choice in itself, this watch also deserves a rightful spot beside the SKX007. From its looks to the functions it offers, it’s a classic watch. Moreover, you get an automatic movement and a water-resistance of 200 metres. Plus, you also get an ISO-certified watch! It’s hard to go wrong with this watch. I know Rolex blah blah,Tudor,blah blah,but come on,this watch is cheap accurate reliable as a wood burning stove,has a style all of its own and can hold its own against ANYTHING else from any other brand- (sorry Seiko you’re not even in the running). I bought the Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e on a whim! I thought, ‘I wonder if it’s a good Seiko SKX alternative?’ I’m going to say that this watch was extremely low priced, due to being refurbished, however I came to find out that, it was sold as refurbished but it wasn’t. It has a dial error, missing some wording. Citizen just sold them cheap for that sole reason. Quirky value as an investment piece? I don’t buy them for investment reasons though. Despite this being an automatic movement, the Miyota 8200 comes with a hand-winding feature. Not all affordable dive watches have this. Particularly, you won’t get this feature from a Seiko watch like the SKX007. 4. The StrapMan, those titanium EcoDrives are brilliant. I’d say that if you’re a Citizen fan already you won’t regret going with an automatic NY-series diver. I’ll be honest, I got mine three years ago now, and I’ve never had any issues with timekeeping, which is quite impressive considering that I have no idea when it was last serviced. Throw in the mix that I’ve done just about everything and anything with this watch and it makes an impressive thing even more so! Regarding weaknesses of the SKX007, I dislike how the dial is a crisp white and the hands are off-white. To some, it may appear like patina, but I find it a little cheesy. Also, I see a small gap between the day and date wheel, which is not typical for Seiko. Aside from that, my only other general wish is for a hand-winding movement, but because this is Seiko, I can’t be too surprised that the watch is sold without one. There’s no denying it’s a well made Japanese watch that’s ideal for diving with the ISO certification and high visibility display. Plus it’s what I’d class as an affordable watch which is something I love featuring on this watch blog. The Citizen Promaster NY0040 is often overshadowed when it comes to diving watches by the likes of the Seiko SKX007 or the Seiko SKX009 which there’s no denying, are impressive watches. I just think when it comes to ISO certified diving watches, the Promaster NY0040 deserves a little more credit. Overall, the dial of this watch is clean and well-balanced. It’s basically how a basic dive watch should look and it doesn’t have unnecessary functions or information on it.
