Sure, there are the obvious ones, Water Ladybird for example, but also a fleet of more difficult species. We’ve spotted adult ladybirds in the garden a few times now although we didn’t manage to spot one today. During the winter months the Ladybirds will hibernate in window frames, walls, log piles or trees, and emerge to mate in the spring. Since much of their prey are agricultural pests, coccinellids are considered to be beneficial insects.

For now though, those new adult ladybirds can spread their wings and nip on over to the nearby runner beans where their savvy minded prey seem to have relocated. To help identify a few of the trickier species out there, recently, I’ve been experimenting by rearing ladybird larvae at home. Green Gardener only supplies British Adalia bipunctata ladybird larvae – we do NOT supply Harlequin ladybirds. Ladybirds should be applied when the Aphids are present on plants and the temperatures are above 10°C although best control is gained at 15-20°C. The predators we supply occur naturally in the UK and are totally safe to pets, children and the environment.

The two-spot ladybird (Adalia bipunctata) is a British native and natural predator of aphids (greenfly and blackfly).These had been provided as tiny pinprick insects and some eggs so we put them in breathable fabric bags supplied with them and hung these in the apple trees so they could emerge from them gradually.
