Instead, Flowers offers an interesting look at them through the human characters’ eyes as they try to work out just how these supposedly crude creatures are winning the war for the skies over the planet. But once I’ve gotten over myself (which usually requires a good night’s sleep) I try and consider the feedback objectively, and usually it is on point. There is a third significant character in the story, but it’s difficult to talk about her without straying into the realms of spoilers. The question of what the truth actually is weighs heavy on Simlex, as he tries to reconcile what he thought he knew – of Shard, of the orks, of war and of the Imperium itself – with what he sees all around him in the swamps and skies of Bacchus, and the sinister halls of the planet’s governor.

I was really disheartened when I got the initial feedback and advice to move in a different direction, but I went with it and ultimately I think the final story is much better than my original idea. The style of warfare is something of a departure from most Warhammer stories, where battles are as much about will and endurance as they are firepower and skill. The ork attackers are not the knock-kneed simpletons portrayed in old propaganda picts, but devious killers poised to conquer the skies. Always depicted with a sneer on her face, Shard appears not to care about her position, and only truly loves flying, drinking and fighting. From there, Simlex attempts to film the flying aces in action, but he soon begins to realise that the supposedly stupid orks have developed a giant fleet of sophisticated airships and are slowly winning the battle against the Aeronautica Imperialis. At the beginning of the tale his star is in ascendance, and he is dismissive of the woefully inaccurate efforts produced by his predecessors.

The entire narrative leads up to an excellent final fiery confrontation with the orks, which ties in nicely to many of the story elements featured throughout the book. ToW: You came to writing for Black Library during the 2018 open submissions window – how did you find that process? The orks are on the backfoot, the Imperial forces are in no way overstretched, and there is zero possibility of the escalating conflict spilling over onto neighbouring planets and consuming the entire subsector. I enjoy the subtext of a story, especially in dialogue, where characters may converse on one topic whilst something else unspoken is nevertheless being actively discussed. Flight Commander Lucille von Shard is an ace, a living exemplar of what it means to fly in the name of the Emperor… or so Propagandist Kile Simlex is told.

Until about a year ago, when a very nice chap from the Black Library got in touch with me regarding a recent submission. If you haven’t already, I would definitely recommend checking out some of Denny’s previous Black Library stories – you can find out more about Denny himself in the Author Spotlight interview we did back in 2019. He makes for a brilliant viewpoint characters, not least because while in theory he has access to a lot of information about what’s out there in the galaxy, in truth he understands very little about what things are really like (as opposed to Shard, who has few of Simlex’s privileges but a greater grasp of the realities of life). Simlex has lofty aspirations for the pict, envisioning it as his magnum opus, featuring the fearless Flight Commander Lucille von Shard’s victory over craven ork invaders.

Everything comes together extremely well at the end, and I loved some of the brilliant revelations and secrets that come out as the story concludes.In fact, were she a less capable warrior, she would have long since been consigned to a penal colony. The sudden increase in ork activity is a cause for concern, but Planetary Governor Dolos is adamant the insurgence will not affect the distilleries or impact Bacchus’ ongoing prosperity.
