About this deal

Mica platelets have a high level of transparency. White light will pass through the platelet—the titanium dioxide layer has a higher refraction index than the mica and the surrounding. Light is refracted and at the interfaces reflected in different angles. This phase shift creates so-called interference colors—the main characteristic of a pearlescent effect—. Iron oxide shows its typical color even in thin layers on a mica substrate. Luster generally increases as the particle size increases. The best appearance for pearlescent pigments is the optimum distribution of 10 to 60 microns. Application method: Standard methods for calendered films. No overstretching and overheating and Post heating is necessary. This particle size distribution is tight enough to ensure a uniform oxide coating across all the particles, helping to boost the color intensity further. It also creates a D50 optimal for light reflection with minimal edge scattering. An example of this type of product would be Silver Pearlescent pigment. The larger distributions will appear glittery but provide the least coverage, while the small distributions will appear satin and have more coverage.

Solid paint is cheaper to produce and apply to a car when it is being built, and most manufacturers offer a limited selection of no-cost solid paint choices on a new model; options vary, but you may find a car has three solid paint options as standard (although some cars have only one free paint option), with red, white, blue and grey being common colours. Once the panels or profiles have been cut or installed we regard this as an acceptance of their quality and suitability for purpose and therefore we cannot accept any subsequent claims for faults or damage. Dirt shows more obviously on metallic finishes than solids, so you may end up cleaning your car more often. Be careful, though, as the paint marks more easily. Use a proper car shampoo – washing up liquid contains abrasive salts – and make sure there’s no grit on the sponge. Over-zealous polishing causes swirl marks and car wash brushes can leave marks, too. But any marks can usually be carefully buffed out.On detailed work where there is no glaze at all, what I would recommend is that you lacquer the piece first so you would lacquer it with either the Gloss Lacquer or the Matt Lacquer. I think the matt is nicer because you’ve got this lovely contrast between the matt and the shine of the Pearlescent Glaze. The process would be paint with your Chalk Paint™, apply your Matt Lacquer and then over that you would put your Pearlescent Glaze. Alternatively, you can finish by waxing it, which is no problem at all. It will actually matte it slightly. The other thing you can’t do is wax it and then put the pearl paint on top, because wax is obviously oily so you can’t do it the alternative way. But yes, more or less everything’s possible.

How Pearlescent Pigments Work Pearlescent pigments are coated mica platelets that provide color and exciting visual effects to various coatings, plastics, and printing ink. These luster pigments are transparent and reflect light because of their smooth surfaces. Light reflected from the platelets creates a sense of depth and a luster that varies with particle size—smaller particles impart a satin sheen. In comparison, larger particles create sparkle or glitter. Some pearlescent pigments are iridescent showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles. Although these pigments are non-metallic, they can give the paint a metallic look. Almost all pearlescent pigments are non-reactive and non-toxic. Pearlescent pigment grades include silver (white), interference colors (yellow, orange, red, violet, blue, green), earth tone colors (bronze, copper, russet), and gold colors (light gold and gold). Maximum reflection and color travel are only achieved when the platelets are uniformly oriented parallel to the substrate. This is achieved primarily by film shrinkage and leveling of the coating while it is drying. It can also be affected by the size of the particles.

Pearlescent pigments are thin, smooth, transparent platelets with high indices of refraction. The alignment of these particles in the end product and their particle size (which determines the luster effect—a reflectivity function) are also important characteristics. The larger the particle, the greater the luster and the better the orientation of the flake. While small particles don't orient as well, there are more edges to scatter white light, which results in higher opacity and a more "satiny" gloss. Luster is a gentle sheen or soft glow resulting from a partly transparent substance with a partially reflective surface. The reflective property of minerals with vitreous luster is similar to that of glass. This is a very common type of luster and can occur in transparent or translucent minerals, such as quartz and calcite. The vast majority of cars come with a ‘solid’ paint finish as standard, with metallic and pearlescent finishes costing extra (see below).Solid = a simple body colour with no additives in the paint. Usually comprises 3 coats, these being a primer, then the paint, then a clear, protective lacquer. Solid paints aren’t particularly shiny and are normally the only standard/no-cost colours offered by manufacturers. I’m going to do the same thing, a little bit of the glaze and a little bit of Aubusson Blue. Oops, too much there! So just wipe that away and add on to there. You end up with these beautiful colours, very, very shimmering and just beautiful. And you can mix. So I could use a little bit of Florence and mix that with some Aubusson Blue I think just to make it a bit darker. That one is actually quite strong! The more paint you put, the less shimmering it’s going to be, and I think that is the beauty of it all the shimmering.
