There is some heavy duty subject matter in the book, child abuse, mental health issues and LGBTQ phobia. But it was handled realistically and sensitively. The characters also felt very real to me, especially Ellie's mom. I loathed her. There was so much about Ellie's childhood and her mom that reminded me of my own. I could understand how easy it would be for her to attach herself to the Kim-Prescott family. Not to be a grinch but like… Respectfully: I just didn’t care about their family traditions: cookie making, snowball fights, decorating, family photos, Christmas songs…… god I was bored 😪 (no offense)

I put this on hold at my library before it even came out, based on the buzz. The hold became available in time for me to take it to my parents’ for Christmas (a Christmas miracle!). I loved it so much that I bought my own print copy, which just arrived a couple days ago.Ellie’s banter with Andrew was suuuper funny! I wish we’d gotten to see more of them together. And overall, I wish we’d gotten to see more of the side characters. At the end of the book, we’re supposed to believe Ellie really connected with the whole family, but there were barely any bonding moments between them, so it felt jarring when she said she loved them all. Ellie’s best friend and the coworker were also pretty irrelevant, and I lowkey forgot they existed. A sparkling winter wonderland, quirky family traditions, and a messy 'love trapezoid' make the yuletide gay in this earnest queer rom-com... it's delightful to watch this clever spin on the fake dating trope unfold. This is a winner. - Publishers Weekly Alison Cochrun is one of my favourite romance writers. Her characters feel so real and complex, and her stories are incredibly fun and engaging, with just the right amount of drama and without relying on irritating plot devices. This one was the perfect book to read at Christmas, especially as - like protagonist Ellie - I am also a webcomic creator! I really related to Ellie's burnout and desire to rediscover her old passion for making art.
