Tobacco absolute is used not only in the tobacco-themed fragrances, for in small quantities it adds depth and character to aldehydic frgrances and imparts some typical dryness to fougeres and oriental compositions. Tobacco notes combine well with sandalwood, castoreum, labdanum, sage, vetiver, cedar and violet-iris. Tobacco absolute also contains lactones: first and foremost, the peachy gamma-undecalactone and the nutty-coconut whisky lactone with undertones of tonka beans, caramelized sugar and celery. There is also a great number of fantasy fragrances where the tobacco note is sometimes used in a rather unusual context: e.g. Parfum d'Empire Tabac Tabouwith its daffodil-honey accord, plus a tart and burnt note of immortelle; the aniseed-aquatic Tabac Licorii by Maison Incens. Tobacco (Lat. Nicotiana) is a genus of plants of the solanaceous family (Lat. Solanaceae). This family is represented by such apparent tobacco relatives as tomato, eggplant, bell pepper (capsicum), potato, boxthorn (better known as goji berries) as well as some very poisonous plants such as belladonna, datura and henbane.

When heavily diluted, tobacco extracts get their characteristic tobacco-cigar aroma: somewhat sweet, herbaceous, woody, slightly mossy, with notes of hay, tea, honey, dried fruit and hints of flowers, leather and chocolate. Despite the progressive floral bouquet, Tabac is a mellow fragrance that has aged somewhat since its release. Contextually, this is quite paradoxical given that the 1950s was a period of particularly macho fragrances such as Old Spice or Skin Bracer. Strictly speaking, Mäurer & Wirtz acquired 4711 in 2006 from Procter & Gamble. They themselves bought it from Wella AG who had taken over the Mülhens family company in 1994.Tabac Original is widely celebrated eau de cologne both domestically and internationally. It enjoys considerable popularity not only in continental Europe but also in the USA. Among synthetic tobacco scent shaping odorants, we find compounds of very different structure: many synthetic cariotenoids have a tobacco note, with veltonal, a Bedoukian product, being one of the brightest examples of that: an intense violet-ionone odorant with a distinctive tobacco tone and an interesting raspberry-pomegranate fruity accord. Many amber-woody materials possess a tobacco aspect in them: kefalis, trimofix, tobacarol (a synthetic derivative of caryophylene oxide). Faint oak notes reach out from the floral bouquet to draw us to the fragrance’s base. Here we experience an accord of sandalwood and vetiver with a long amber finish, which features hints of rose-scented tallow soap. However, the red waves across the rest of the cardboard, which are either lava or water, feel out of place. They come across as too recent to coincide with a 1950s feel yet too retro to be modern, which leaves us with something oddly 1990s.

Nevertheless, this has caused it to become a fragrance that is best worn by mature men well over the age of 30.The biggest contributors to the shaping of its charateristic tobacco fragrance are carotenoids: ionones and their many derivatives, damascenone, edulane and its derivatives, theaspiranes (important components of the scent of tea and osmanthus), safranal, megastigmatrienone – which is also present in osmanthus, but plays one of major roles here; Symrise and certain other companies produce it under the brand Tabanon. By the very name “Tabac”, you would expect a woody, leathery tobacco blend. However, instead we experience and extremely floral and soapy fragrance. The aldehydic properties create this soapy and waxy body that linges in the nostrils with rounded floral notes. Unfortunately, many may struggle with the heart’s extremely heady bouquet. It lasts for longer than the average fragrance and leaves a viscous sweet trail.
