About this deal

To be brutally honest, there has never been a 3d Sonic game that is as good as any of the 3d Mario games. Sega's never quite got it right. Thats not to say there haven't been good games, but don't expect 100% quality.

They are very, very different styles of gameplay, not really directly compariable. I know some people will have nostalgia for the Game Gear one (left) but in my opinion the Master System one (right) is objectively better and looks far closer to the 16bit sprite. I guess you could use a video to know where upcoming rings and bombs are, but that involves pausing the game and interrupting gameplay and control, and feels a bit like cheating. Save states can be used to restart special stages after losing, but you get more practice, increase you’re skills and remember more each time, plus you don’t forget the layout while avoiding enemy’s between posts. Thats the nature of itterative improvements rather than reinventing the game each time. I'm sure some people will feel that way about Mario Wonder. They'll also feel that way about Sonic Superstars. And thats ok. But me personally, I'm frothing at the mouth for both of them! lol.

Apart from some news for Sonic Frontiers and the upcoming Sonic Superstars this week, Sega has also rolled out a brand new patch for its retro compilation Sonic Origins Plus. samuelvictor It's nice to "see" you again, by the way. So there are even more differences! Funny that some people say that they are "identical" except for the zoom. The Rush games on DS and Rivals games on PSP are both pretty good. Not amazing or anything, but fun. I also enjoy Lost World on Wii U / PC more than most people seem to. Its similar to Mario Galaxy, but nowhere near as good. Its a 7/10 if you can find it cheap. Many would argue Sega actually had the idea before Nintendo, as running around spheres & cylindars with gravity pulling you to them was one of the concepts of Sonic Xtreme, the cancelled Saturn game! lol. Sonic Origins has some puzzling issues and omissions that you wouldn't expect in a retro compilation of this caliber. There's no save-state/reload functionality, nor are there any screen filters that can help smooth the pixels into a nice CRT-like look. There is one "anti-aliasing" screen option that makes the screen look like it's been smeared with petroleum jelly, but that's it.

That must have been super frustrating for you buying it digitally just before the physical was announced. That kind of thing drives me mad. I bought the limited edition version of Mania with the statue etc that came with a digital code, so that didn't effect me, but to be fair a new Sonic game is always going to be a day one for me anyway. Of course as they are fan games they'll have to be PC only, unless Sega wants to hire me! haha. The "8bit Origins" one I'm mostly just doing because its something I WISH Sega would do but I've waited long enough and they seem like they are never going to bother. On the Switch, in particular, the opening animation quality for the game has been improved. Along with this, players can also look forward to some Game Gear game improvements, audio fixes and multiple game-specific fixes.

Secondly, the gameplay is utterly different. The first game is smaller and more basic but there are hundreds of ways of playing Sonic games, especially Sonic CD, 2, 3&K and Mania where it's definitely not the same playing not knowing what you're doing and playing them as a "sport", bouncing, dashing and jumping where necessary and using the enemies as an occasional springboard. The whole idea behind the new collection was apparently to “modernize” the games; moving them into a new engine (amusingly called the “Retro Engine”) rather than simply emulating them. I can't believe we finally reached the point when both Sonic 2D and 3D games are solid 😂.

I feel its important to point out for those that weren't there and don't know, that at Sega's peak there were SEVERAL HUNDRED entire dedicated "Sega World" and "Sega Park" indoor theme parks in multiple countries. Some were just rebranded small arcades but several of them were enormous and had proper rides, shows etc.
