My taste aside, it just doesn't seem like something that could get so popular, and be so universally loved. At this point it is confirmed that the main theme is “even if you are unusual/a bit fat/everyone thinks you’re evil, you are a good person, accept yourself as you are.

Though Linus would love to know what happens after he files those reports, he also knows that to ask is not his place, therefore he refrains.And even though it may feel like you’ve previously read this story, there is an exceptionally good chance you will adore it more than all the others that have come before. Without any idea as to exactly why he has been sent to the island, Linus sends his weekly reports, providing his employers with information about the children. And that’s kind of the theme of the whole book is, is to raise your voice for those who don’t have one. He works for the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, and is given a highly classified assignment by Extremely Upper Management (who are as stiff and stuffy as they sound). In February I was asked for my birthday wishlist and, luckily for me, it was one of a pile of four books that found their way into a birthday parcel from my sister.

And if, regrettably, you have misplaced your heart somewhere on this treacherous road known as life. I've seen reviews that say it is "preachy" or "OTT" but honestly, that says more about them than it does about the book. And then us readers find it and it makes every struggle you’re going through just that much more manageable. However, when Linus finds himself on the Island of Marsyas, tasked with inspecting the orphanage there run by Arthur Parnassus, an orphanage like no other, he is completely unprepared for what awaits him!The House in the Cerulean Sea is a love letter to those who should be allowed to feel small and cared for when the world seems dark. Sal, the oldest, is a quiet, reserved, and shy boy who’s seen and experienced more evils than any kid of his age should and still holds out hope for better. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days.

TJ Klune is extremely good at setting the scene for the reader and the description is so vivid that I immediately felt drawn to the island of Marsayas and the people who live there.

and as far as i can tell in the 23 years i’ve lived in this yucky world, there is no business trip that will deus ex machina your sorry ass into your place and your purpose and your people. Linus and Arthur are also utterly lovely and it was so refreshing to read a romance blossoming between two adults in their forties, one of whom is a little overweight and whose hair is thinning. Linus must live with them for a month, reporting back to DICOMY, and decide if the orphanage should stay open. Quirk and charm give way to a serious exploration of the dangers of complacency in this delightful, thought-provoking Orwellian fantasy from Klune. In fact I thought Linus made for rather a refreshing and unlikely hero, and I also enjoyed the little sprinkling of romance in the book too.

J. Klune fans and those new to his writing, The House in the Cerulean Sea is a heart-warming, wholesome, diverse, ridiculous, and completely lovable fantasy story. This definitely felt a bit like a children's book but the characters were attaching and I definitely laughed/smiled a few times while listening to this audiobook.The novel delicately carves out the myriad ways in which we see and don’t see our own world and the people around us. Love and kindness virtually radiate from Klune’s words and ever so tenderly spiral around you like a soft, warm blanket. It is his job to inspect orphanages and schools for Magical Youth and offer his recommendations as to whether they are fit for purpose. He has been working there for 17 years, the job is routine, he visits various orphanages and schools funded by the Department, files his reports and then the cases are done and he remains detached.
