About this deal

Uke got scared at night and couldn’t sleep because of the wind and trees outside. Then it started raining so the boys rushed out to cover up the bases because there’s a match tomorrow. The uke told the seme that he’d give up the recommendation for N University and stop playing baseball. The two got super soaked and took off the wet clothes, the seme confessed to the uke, kissed and hugged him. The relationship between the two boys have been reset. Awakening again in 1963, Jeff realizes that he is trapped in an endless cycle of death and re-birth and that, yet another time, he is faced with the choice of how to live the next 25 years of his truncated and ever-repeating life. In his second life (or was it his third or fourth cycle?), he meets Pamela Phillips, a world-acclaimed film-maker. Because of certain anachronisms that don't fit with his knowledge of how world history unrolls in the turbulent decade of the 1960s, Jeff realizes that Phillips is also a "re-player", another person trapped in her own cycle of death and re-birth. Pamela and Jeff discover their love for one another, re-discover that love in one "replay" after another and attempt to make the best of the opportunities offered them to improve their lives and the lives of those around them!

It's focused on two ex-baseball high school players who share more than their passion for this sport. Tsukahara's art style is pretty unique and pleasant to look at. Compared to other yaois out there, this one is not only focused on relationship itself, but also on boys' future, their fears and their passion for the sport. What is odd about Replay is that there is seemingly no point to the time loops. In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray is doomed to keep repeating the same day until he becomes a better person. In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise is repeating the same day in the hope of figuring out how to defeat the alien invasion. In Replay, Jeff just keeps reliving a smaller and smaller section of his past. He lives his life differently each time, but his choices make no difference to the ultimate outcome. Nor does his extended lifespan make him a drastically different or better person. I don't really care about genre categories and whether Replay should be considered science fiction or fantasy or mainstream (speculative fiction seems the best bet) . The author deliberately avoids any attempt at a scientific explanation for the ordeal/blessing Jeff is subjected to, because the point of the novel is self discovery and the Meaning of Life. Jeff exclaims at one point:

When I try wrapping my mind around time travel and the math associated with such concepts the pressure in my head usually has me looking for a shot of high octane alcohol to keep my brain from exploding into shards of disconnected thoughts. It wouldn’t be very useful after that.A quiet middle child of a boisterous Italian family tries to discover who he is and how he fits in with his family when he discovers his father's autobiography ("Age of 13"). Along the way he discovers a long lost relative and shares with a friend who has lost her little brother. Participating in a school play helps him to bring all the pieces together and encourages him to have the strength to be the person he wants to be. The characters are ex teammates at school and one is not as school oriented as the other. To get into a good college they must study hard as their future together literally depends on it.

I went into this feeling pretty ho-hum. I’m not a big sports manga person and baseball is my least favorite so I was like at least there are some hottie manga boys for me to fawn over. Ken’s book was just as good as the rest. Still fantastic. Well-written. The whole ball of wax. And it’s very emotional. I love it. :)Llegué a este libro por casualidad. I had read it twenty years ago and I did not remember anything about "Replay", except that I did liked it a lot. In a later replay, the two decide to take their experiences public, giving press conferences announcing future events in explicit detail. The government eventually takes notice and forces Pamela and Jeff to provide continued updates on foreign activities. Although the government denies responsibility, major political events begin to transpire differently, and Jeff attempts to break off the relationship. The government refuses, and the pair are imprisoned and forced to continue providing information.

The artwork was lovely and I love the trust and openness between these two characters. I especially liked that neither of them questioned their sexuality like characters in BL manga do sometimes. His girlfriend Judy, the girl that feels she is being wild and crazy letting Jeff massage her breast on the OUTSIDE of her blouse, does offer to give him a handjob. This is 1963 still several years away from the summer of love, and the late ‘60s didn’t happen to all people, some had “two fifties and moved right into the seventies”. (Remember Annie Kinsella from Field of Dreams) Judy is fine and good for an inexperienced 18 year old, but then we have to remember that Jeff is actually 43 years old. What he needs is Sharla. Written over 30 years ago, Replay feels very familiar, to the point that I read portions and wondered if I had read the book when it first came out. Many of the ideas and beats in this story can be found in later time-loop fictional works—using knowledge of the past to make money, to try to stop some past tragedy, or to find a more satisfying partner after a failed marriage in the original timeline. There were parts that were quite slow or didn't pertain to the story-line. However, the art was absolutely gorgeous and this mangaka definitely has become a favourite of mine with their art style. Also, let's just appreciate this gorgeous cover! I am loving the pastel colours.

None. We never learn why or how they keep reliving their lives, just that they have learned some big lesson about making the most out of their futures. Except I'm pretty sure that Jeff is just going to continue evaluating women's worth as sex objects and being a terrible husband, because he is the worst. This was really cute! Yuta was a really cute character and this is a cute little friends to lovers romance.
