Using their unrivalled techniques in string manufacture, Aquila have conquered this age old problem by adding fine layers of copper powder to their already superior Nylgut strings, increasing their density without adding to their gauge. I’d recommend the same ones I recommend for standard tuning which are Aquila’s since this step down tuning shouldn’t change tension all that much.

If you want your instrument to function more like a travel guitar, you can tune your instrument just like a guitar with standard guitar tuning. So, preferring lighter strings in general on my guitars, both steel and nylon, I decided to pick up a set of Pro Arte light tension strings (EJ43) which I have used on occasion before on my classical, though now use normal tension.

Installing these, after reading the pre-2017 stories of breakage with Aquila E1, G, and especially B strings, and also reading Mimmo's updates in 2016, 2017 and 2018 on improved formulas (for full-sized CG Rubinos), I was still terrified of breakage (I have a nervous personality) so I tuned them up to several steps below, progressively more steps below as I went up from E6 to E1, as in one step below for E6, three below for G, four for B, and five for E1), left them overnight, watched the Aquila installation video here: did the stretching like in the video but more gently and twice as many times, slowly brought all but the E and B to pitch, left those a full step low for a couple hours, then brought them up to pitch with additional gentle stretching. In fact, sometimes the guitalele can be easier to learn on initially due to the smaller size (especially if you’re a child or have small hands).OK, so I'm a relatively new owner of a Yamaha GL-1 Guitalele, and while the factory strings didn't wow me, I played them long enough to get acquainted with the instrument.
