About this deal

Orphan Monster Spy was, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It had a great consistency throughout the book, from the characters to the plot, the whole book was written superbly. And Devil Darling Spy was no different. This changes drastically when she can no longer rely on the Captain who has lost his own confidence and control. She becomes the adult, the cold monster who has to make the hard decisions and complete the mission. Because if she doesn't, how many would die? She becomes a woman willing to kill hundreds to save millions. It is an excellent transition and you can see how she thinks, how she fights it and how she comes to terms with it. A half-Jewish girl in Nazi Germany passes up a chance to escape in favor of the opportunity to screw with Nazis. Let’s dive into the setting because it is one of my favourites of all time. Devil Darling Spy, like Orphan Monster Spy is set in WWII, in the midst of the Nazi regime and is a thriller, ye you guessed it, spy novel! The relationship between Sarah and the captain was interesting and complex. They had no one but each other and in their reliance upon each other, found a kinship neither had expected to find.

The action in this book was also incredibly wild since it really felt like I was watching everything unfold from the big screen. It did get a little gory after some of the situations but I think those scenes added to the dire setting Sarah was in. Nothing felt too unrealistic since --- while I was reading --- I kept realizing that Sarah was only 15, which sometimes baffled me since I couldn’t imagine being that strong at that age. It just goes to show how desperate those times were and how you really needed to protect yourself to survive. I think that overall Killeen did a great job of transferring the readers into the environment which really made me feel like I was in the late ‘30s, making the read all the more exciting. A different (for me) aspect of World War Two I hadn't read/heard much about... I have vague memories of hearing something, but most likely not in my history class in high school. It was all very fascinating to me and had me on the edge of my seat for most of the narrative. I think the way that Matt Killeen portrayed racism within this book was well done, it explored the white saviour trope and how our main character Sarah has implicit bias. I also enjoyed the "letters" that Sarah wrote in her head when things were getting too much. This book was a great progression on from the first book, whilst still taking things in a completely different direction. I adore Matt Killeen's writing, he is able to evoke powerful images in my minds eye as well as allowing you to empathise will all of the characters and their emotions. I grew up in a decade obsessed with the Second World War. It seemed to dominate the books, comics, TV, playground games…everything. However, my mother’s best friend was German and after many sparkly, golden summers with her wonderful, warm and rabidly pacifist family, I found myself unable to swallow the idea that Germans were the war-mad, evil monsters depicted. Yet the more I learned of the Holocaust, the less sense any of this made, as I increasingly identified with its victims. I was an endlessly bullied child, in an era when bullying was considered the fault of the victim by the adults who were supposedly there to protect me. Thus began a lifelong appalled and horrified fascination with the Third Reich, its crimes and the war fought to defeat it.The winners of the Diverse Book Awards 2023 have been announced, with one winner from each of the four categories announced: Picture book, Children... At the same time, I found it satisfying how strong Sarah was in their company. In an ignorant bubble, where they were being taught that an Arian race was supreme and strong, there was Sarah, out thinking, outrunning and outmanoeuvring them at every turn. Sarah, a Jew, someone seen as week and a plague on society. Sarah me ha encantado, una niña muy fuerte e inteligente, a la que en ocasiones le sobrepasan las situaciones a las que se enfrenta pero se recompone y actúa con una habilidad increíble, lo menos que me gusta es la dureza con la que se habla a sí misma (usando las palabras de su Mutti). Por otro lado el personaje del capitán también es adorable, a su forma y con sus distancias, lo cual es comprensible. En esta novela llegas a sentir pena por muchos personajes, pero especialmente quise saber más sobre Mauser. ¿Qué paso después con ella?

I dont often say this as normally I feel the first books are better, as much as I enjoyed the first I much preferred this one. The plot was chillingly uncomfortable. A lot of things happens that make you gag. Or chill you to the bone. I also really loved her relationship with Captain Floyd. They have this really sweet and caring father/daughter connection that reminded me a lot of Hopper and Eleven from season two of “Stranger Things” (aka my all-time FAVORITE show). He also really became this super supportive figure in Sarah’s life and I really just want more scenes from the pair! Sarah intrigued me very much and at times I was very glad she was on "side of the angels" so to speak. A few times she sent a chill down my spine.Me ha encantado este libro. Pero obvien la sinopsis, menos mal que la leí después, como siempre, pero te cuenta la historia al completa, exceptuando el final, por lo que no permite ir adentrándote en las situaciones e intriga.
