About this deal

Holly Bourne is a great advocate of young teens reading about difficult issues as a 'safe space' to consider and discuss those issues, this book does a great job in that sphere. It’s something that’s at the forefront of discussions on social media right now, and to explore that through fiction was amazing.

When Almond’s exhaustion with her role as influencer threatens to overspill into the placement, she’s aware there’s no chance of anything building with Immy. I think it was really interesting to take a look at the world of influencers, particularly child influencers, who haven’t had much of a say in the matter too. The author did a really good job at making the reader feel immersed and like the actual main character, at least that's what I thought. Becky Chambers's new series continues to ask: in a world where people have what they want, does having more even matter? I loved how many important topics this discussed, not only does it go into the highs and lows of being on the internet, but also discussed topics such as mental health, and racism among other things.

And the overall plots and storyline was really great, it was interesting and wild yet still realistic and I appreciated that a lot. It genuinely got quite dark at times, darker than I was expecting, but it’s also pretty realistic in regards to what some people will do, especially when hidden behind an anonymous username online. Sage has a keen eye for the realities of contemporary teenage life; Almond's voice is fresh and believable. This is a perfect book for it's intended audience, but also a reflective book for an older audience. Her mother’s high on a new campaign that offers ‘stratospheric’ influence, yet Almond’s falling apart.

Almond is only 17 and her mother has moulded her into being the perfect teenager, with her perfect skin, perfect life, and endless free beauty products to promote.
