Final thoughts- LG Gram 17 The only other slight quirk is that the keypad offsets the main keyboard a bit and that takes a little getting used to. I never use a keypad and it would have been perfect for me if it didn't exist and the rest of the keyboard was centered.

Here it is important to understand very subtly the target audience for each model from the point of view of marketers and its size. If they are stupid or just sawing the company's budgets, there will be no sense – sales will be minimal. For example, why does LG make the Gram 16 series with a mutilated numpad, when there is a 17 series with a full-fledged one? Who would agree to carry a 16" (which is uncomfortable in itself) instead of a full-fledged by keyboard 17? From my point of view, the 16" series is pointless to buy. With no external speaker grilles, I wasn’t expecting great things from the Gram 16’s 2 x 1.5W sound system, despite the DTS:X Ultra certification, but I was pleasantly surprised with that, too. The fan keeps quiet even on the High setting, though, at 35-36 dBA at head level. LG could have allowed for a higher setting on this High profile, somewhere around 40 dBA

Your Face Controls the Screen

An updated thermal module is most likely available on the LG Gram 16 Pro with the RTX 2050 GPU, but that’s something we will discuss in a future article. It’s still ludicrously light and portable for a 17in laptop, but this year’s version has better battery life, improved connectivity and faster performance. If you hanker after something that works just as well as a mobile workhorse as it does a desktop replacement, it’s pretty much the perfect solution. In all fairness, this 2022 variant is significantly faster in multitasking and heavier CPU loads than the previous generation, so it can run Photoshop for photo editing or some programming software fairly well. Just don’t expect this to match the capabilities of higher-power ultraportable laptops. LG’s genre-bending Gram 17 was one of my favourite laptops of 2020. By squeezing a huge 17in display into a laptop nearly as light as a MacBook Air, LG achieved something special and in a world of identikit 13.3in ultraportables that’s something to be applauded. Here’s what we got in terms of battery life, with the screen’s brightness set at around 120 nits (~60 brightness).

Compared to the previous-generation Gram built on an 11th-gen Core i7-1165G7 processor, this 2022 model is a major step up in CPU performance, and roughly on par in GPU capabilities. The faster CPU makes a difference both with daily use and multitasking, but also with occasional intensive loads. Hence, the LG Gram 16 is not for everyone, especially when you also factor in the price that you’re paying for it. But that’s where things get interesting. At MSRP prices, the slightly larger LG Gram 17 makes more sense to me. If you’re going for this sort of large-screen laptop for daily use, why not get the largest possible display, especially when the Gram 17 also offers a brighter panel and a full keyboard, plus a minor bump in performance based on our experience with the two units? A few other aspects worth mentioning here are the fact that this panel doesn’t get very dim at the lowest- brightness setting, which could be an inconvenience when using it in a pitch-dark room, and it doesn’t get overly bright either, which could be an issue for outdoor use. So you’ll want to keep this mostly inside. Samsung’s Galaxy Book2 Pro offers some direct competition thanks to an even more impressive all-up weight of just 1.1kg. Even the Galaxy Book2 Pro 360, which is the fully convertible version, only weighs 1.4kg in 15.6in form. There was a hardware fault with the camera module out of the box so that never worked for me, hopefully not a common issue and it wasn't a deal breaker for me (at the time - you don't realise how much you miss something until you don't have it).

The only fly in the ointment is the rather high price. Otherwise, LG really has done a very, very good job of building a proper large-screen, lightweight laptop with decent performance, a full-sized keyboard, a great sound system and a generous selection of ports. It’s an achievement too easy to get blasé about. At the same time, it only offers the performance of a smaller ultrabook, and is in fact outmatched by many of these modern 13 and 14-inch units, mostly because LG use a common internal design between all their Grams, thus the space in this 16-inch chassis is not fully utilized. In other words, that means this Gram 16 is mostly suited for daily tasks and multitasking, but not for serious workloads or for gaming. The 2021 has now been released and the latest model takes that recipe and refines it. It’s still the lightest 17in laptop you can buy and it’s an even more impressive machine than last year’s model. In fact, the only threat to its lightweight laptop crown comes from the new LG Gram 16, which is cheaper, even lighter and has a display that’s almost as big. One of the great things about the LG Gram is that I was able to put Ubuntu on the machine, which I prefer to mac os, for coding. It seems to work well although like a lot of laptops battery life seems worse for linux. That's not the manufacturers fault just less polished drivers etc I guess. But that's pretty universal for all laptops. Finally, if you were looking for a touchscreen on this Gram 17, there isn’t any in this 2022 generation. You will find touch variants of the smaller Gram 15 and Gram 16 models, in their 2-in-1 convertible variants. Hardware, performance, and upgrade options

Spec-wise, this is based on the 2022 Intel 12th-gen Alder Lake Core P hardware platform. The Core i7-1260P is a hybrid design with 4 Performance and 8 Efficiency Cores, as well as 16 combined threads. This implementation supplies the CPU with 15-20W of sustained power in demanding loads, which is lower than most other portable Core P designs on their top-performance profiles. We’ll get in-depth further down. There’s a high-resolution 17-inch 16:10 screen on the LG Gram 17, with averagely sized bezels all around and a solid-quality IPS matte panel on this 2022 model. The LG Gram 17 gets a basic thermal module with a single fan and a short heatpipe, much like all the other past Gram. I note comments asking why this machine exists – for me it fits one part of my laptop requirements – lightness with a big screen and an easy carry.Our test version is the standard configuration of the 2022 LG Gram 17 17Z90Q, with an Intel 12th-gen Alder Lake Core i7-1260P processor, 16 GB of LPDDR5-5200 memory, a fast 1 TB SSD, and the Intel Iris Xe graphics embedded within the Intel processor. Furthermore, this is a standard 60 Hz panel with response times in the 40+ ms GtG, so not ideal for gaming. That’s especially important if you’re considering the RTX 2050 variant over the Iris Xe model. Not only that, but the increased efficiency of the 11th gen CPU also helps out when it comes to working on the move. With the same 80Wh capacity battery in place as in last year’s laptop, the 2021 LG Gram 17 lasted a whopping 13hrs 24mins. That’s around two-and-a-half-hours longer.

Our configuration also comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5-5200 memory. The RAM is soldered on the motherboard and non-upgradeable, but LG offers 16 and 32 GB configurations, which should suffice for most needs.W (~9+ h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Optimal + Balanced Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON; The Normal profile cuts the fan to around 31-32 dBA and 12-17W of sustained power. The CPU runs cooler in this mode, fluctuating between 70 and 85 degrees Celsius. The performance takes a dip, though, around 20-25% lower than on High. They always fall short for their price tag, still with underwhelming specs that truly matter on a portable-first device, still sacrifice too much performance and heat dissipation and require 2000€ or more for the bare minimum RAM (32GB) and SSD (1TB) required for productive work. We’ll cover all these in the review, so you’ll know what to expect when looking at one of these LG Gram 16 laptops. Specs as reviewed – LG Gram 16 The body of the Gram 16 is made from magnesium while the lid is plastic. That’s great for weight reduction but not so great for resistance to twisting. Grab the sides and apply serious torque and the base will flex and creak while the lid warps alarmingly. Of course, while reviewers do things like this, owners generally do not. There’s also a noticeable amount of flex when you press the middle of the keyboard.
