I also found it strange that some of the illustrations didn't match up with the descriptions. One I remember off the top of my head was the picture of the real estate agent's sign which described the woman having a toothy grin. In the illustration her mouth was closed. Why bother with illustrations if they aren't going to match the story? That was very weird, and also lazy.

The pseudonym is a play on that of the artist Hieronymus Bosch. It chronicles the adventures of two children, Cass and Max-Ernest, as they investigate the mysterious death of local magician Pietro Bergamo. The book, like the others in the series, is known for its intrusive narration, in which Bosch briefly interrupts the story for various reasons. Favourite part: I like the story of Pietro and his twin as it reveals a lot secrets about the characters and what the secret is about. Also it is makes loads of questions in your head and making you want to read on. Grandpa Larry and Grandpa Wayne are Cass's grandfathers. Because her biological grandparents are unknown, Larry and Wayne stepped in as her "substitute" grandparents. Grandpa Larry was Cass' mother's history teacher when she was in high school; while Wayne's relationship with Larry or Cass is not stated, Bosch has confirmed that he is in a relationship with Larry. At school, Max-Ernest finds himself telling Cass one of his new jokes, as she was one of the students that he hadn't annoyed yet. He and Cass have a debate about the logic behind his joke, and later form a 'partnership' after Max-Ernest offers to help Cass get surgical gloves so they can dig the school field without much difficulty. Cass also tells Max-Ernest about the Symphony of Smells. The build up done from start up to the climax to the resolution of Book 1 is done beautifully. It presented the overall concept of the story while leaving you with some thing to wander. Makes you want to read book 2 immediately (which I am doing right now ) When Cass and Max-Ernest explore the magician's house, they find a secret room, but Gloria comes down with newlyweds that are looking for a house. Gloria was furious that the duo were trespassing, but Cass and Max-Ernest escape from her and the strange newlyweds. After putting together the secret to the Symphony of Smells, Benjamin Blake is kidnapped from the school by Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L. Even though Cass always thought Benjamin to be strange, Cass decides it's her job to save him. However, during this time, Cass and Max-Ernest stopped being collaborators because Max-Ernest thinks it's too dangerous. Thus, Cass decides to leave on her own as she simply couldn't leave Benjamin to the mercy of Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L.Now, I fully understand that these elements would have most propaply popped up sometime later in the book, but I just... couldn't. So, with that long review I hope I convince you to read this book pleaseee :D Give it a try and if you dont like it... well you can blame me...hehe no seriously give this story a try. Benjamin Blake is a synesthetic boy who goes to Cass and Max-Ernest's school. He became well-known for winning an art contest due to his condition's influence on his work. He is kidnapped by Dr. L. and Ms. Mauvais as they believe his brain would help them find information on the Secret. He mumbles to the point of near-unintelligibility. While being guided to her luxurious suite, Cass spots Gloria, looking younger and slimmer, lounging out at the pool. Gloria is unaware of what is actually going on, and is too busy enjoying her stay. Cass then meets Owen, a stammering attendant who sets up her room and tries to cater to her every need. Cass finds Owen the most appealing out of all those at the spa. Summary: When two eleven year old kids; Cassandra, a self-proclaimed survivalist, and Max-Ernest, find a mysterious "Symphony of Smells", they stumble upon the suspicious death of a magician, some evil alchemists, and the existence of the Secret of life. It's Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L, the antagonists of the novel, are members of the Midnight Sun, a society devoted to finding the Secret in the hopes of gaining eternal life. Once they find out Cass and Max-Ernest have his notebook, they are willing to go to any lengths to take it from them. It is revealed that Dr. L is Pietro Bergamo's twin brother. He is described as tall with silver hair, tanned skin, and white teeth. Ms. Mauvais's attributes resemble those of a Barbie doll: big eyes, a tiny waist, stylish blonde hair, and gold jewelry. Thus, Pietro refers to her as the Golden Lady; he also notes her icy voice. Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L are much older than they look; they wear long gloves to hide their wrinkled skin, which only appears on their hands.

After looking through some spa brochures collected by her mother, Cass locates a spa called the Midnight Sun Spa & Sensorium and decides to pose as one of the Skelton Sisters, a pair of twin pop singers. After being driven to the spa, Cass meets Owen, her stuttering butler. After being subject to several spa treatments, Cass goes looking for Benjamin Blake, only to end up in Ms. Mauvais' office, where Ms. Mauvais tells her that there will be a surprise guest coming for dinner. The surprise guest is none other than Max-Ernest, who came to save Cass. Ms. Mauvais demands to be given the magician's journal, and in the commotion that takes place, her glove is ripped off, revealing an ancient-looking hand. Cass and Max-Ernest realize that all of the Midnight Sun members are extremely old, as they are alchemists on a search for the Secret, which they believe will give them immortality. They also deduce that Dr. L is really Luciano, Pietro's long-lost brother. The couple then trace Cass and Max-Ernest to their school, but instead of finding them, they find a young artist named Benjamin Blake and Cass decides to be a hero and try to save him. The young couple aren’t what they seem from the outside as they have a goal and won’t stop until they achieve it. Will Cass and Max-Ernest save Benjamin and find out the secret of the dead magician?
