About this deal

This the bread-and-butter driver option offering hefty amounts of forgiveness and is easy to launch while offering low spin. This is the model that should launch and spin in-between the other two, but it actually ended up being the lowest launching for me. It wasn’t by much, but I had an average launch of 10.2 degrees with a 10.5-degree head and the same shaft as the Stealth 2 Plus. The spin was a little higher but only by a very small margin, as I averaged 2,917 RPMs.

Even at relatively slow speeds, higher-compression offerings produced the longest driver distances under the conditions tested. On 55-yard wedge shots, the firmest balls are almost invariably slower (again, due to the comparably softer outer layers). You’re probably not going to buy a golf ball based on an additional 1 mph on a partial wedge shot but it’s interesting to see a complete picture of the correlation between compression and speed.Launch angle may not be something you’ve considered on shorter greenside shots but we do see subtle differences. Observations: The fastest balls at 85-mph driver speeds were the Maxfli Tour X, VICE Pro Plus, VICE Pro, Srixon Z-Star Diamond, and Wilson Staff Model. Also interesting that some of the softer models were faster/longer than expected. Lots of good options, it’s just finding what works best for you.

Low-compression offerings dominate the low-spin end of the chart with the TaylorMade Tour Response being the lowest spinning ball in this portion of the test.Under the conditions tested, the list of longest balls off high-speed irons includes a mix of high- and, at least, mid-compression offerings. The fastest “soft” balls under the conditions tested were the Bridgestone TOUR B XS (kinda soft) and the TOUR B RXS, which is legitimately soft. The Wilson Staff Model (and Staff Model R), Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash and Srixon Z-Star were in the Top 10 for all three swing speeds. Without regard for distance, the TaylorMade TP5 and Maxfli Tour X were also notable for higher flight. The list of lowest-spinning models includes a mix of ionomer and non-Tour urethane offerings like the Callaway Supersoft, TaylorMade Tour Response, Srixon Q-Star Tour, Wilson DUO Soft and Titleist AVX.
