About this deal

When you rescue a cat (or obtain any tile) you must immediately place it on your boat. The first cat (or tile) can go anywhere, but after that, every tile (cat or treasure) must touch at least 1 previously played tile. Touching means orthogonally adjacent. Diagonal is not touching. When playing with Events included, tiles are drawn at the beginning of the game and placed over the day numbers that Vesh’s boat travels along. On each day the drawn event tile must be resolved. I enjoyed this module very much. It shakes up the gameplay adding new ways to score and altering gameplay enough to keep The Isle of Cats fresh without unweighting the whole game.

Lesson cards create new rules, awarding or deducting extra points if the conditions of the lesson card is met. For example, players can receive extra points for having a specific number of cats or extra points per particular colour of cats touching the edge of the boat. Cats rescued must immediately be placed on the player’s ship. After the first cat, all subsequent cats must be played adjacent to a previously played one. The goal is to group cats of the same color together for more points, to cover rats on your ship (negative VPs), and to fill up rooms.Here your Sister is trying to steal tiles from the pool! The next item included in Late Arrivals is new cards. I would say this is the most important part of the expansion. Once you have played enough times with the original cards it can get a little predictable. But add in some new cards and it’s like a whole new game! Easily, The Isle of Cats is one of the best polyomino adventures that the boardgame industry has to offer, yet it is so much more than just a polyomino puzzle. What is The Isle of Cats? After each day is over, flip over the next solo color. If all five have been flipped over, the game ends. The Isle of Cats: Explore and Draw features gameplay identical to that of its core counterpart, but made lighter through some clever changes. First off, players are no longer bound to single polyomino drafts. All players can now choose rows of tile cards to add to their ships. Secondly, players now collect Lessons to add as scoring objectives. Finally, the game is wholly drawn and only contains cards, a boat to draw on and pens – making it lighter weight as a game in between games. GameplayAs previously mentioned, each tile features a charming cat from the various species that grace the isle. Placing cats together of the same species (indicated clearly by colour and design) begins to form a cat family. The bigger the family, the more points you will net. Not needing to pay for all your reserved cards takes a little of the edge off the draft, but it incentivises knowing what the other players are up to. It’s easy to deliberately take cards that your opponents want because you can simply discard them and often the only person that knows you’ve been an arse is you. It’s fun! Buying Cards – The Interesting Decision Points are awarded for families of cats, with at least three cats grouped together to be classed as a family. Three cats score eight points, four cats score eleven points and so on. Rare treasures score three points each, lessons are scored based on the objectives detailed. Points are deducted with each visible rat scoring negative one and each room that has not been filled scoring negative five points. The player with the most points is the winner. Solo Play To do so, the players need to banish the curses by matching their required ritual components to the cards in front of them. They can add cards, shift them between rows and even swap with other players by casting spells, with the advanced version of the game giving each cat their own unique ability to use. Permanent baskets: These can be used once a day. When you use a permanent basket, flip it to the used side to show it has been used. Every player starts with one permanent basket. You can gain extra permanent baskets with cards.

Some cards dictate the words OR and ANY #. These give players some free choice in which shapes they add to their ships. Cards without these words do not add restrictions. Some Discovery and Lesson cards contain Oshax. These are colourless cards that can be drawn in any desired colour. Any cards with multiple cats in without restrictions may be drawn separately but must all be drawn.Despite its slightly downbeat starting premise, The Isle of Cats is a brain-teasing tile-placement game about rescuing cats and using your ship’s space efficiently to help animals - making it a deeply satisfying experience for cat fans. All Common Treasures are distributed below the island at the start of the game. Common Treasure do not add to your score but are helpful in filling in small open spaces to completely cover a room to avoid a scoring penalty (-5 points) at the end of the game. From games where you play as magical moggies to brain-teasing exercises in herding cats and adorable card games where you simply aim to keep as many kitties happy as possible, board games have plenty to offer cat people beyond a box for their furry friends to sleep in for a few hours. The games multiple pieces; cards, tokens and game board pieces are all incredibly well produced with quality artwork and finishing, ensuring they will last a very long time - we ended up sleeving our cards to make shuffling easier however this is not necessary.

Anytime cards can always be played on your turn during the Rescue and Rare Finds phases. They can also be played before or after specific points in the game, if desired. The event module adds rule changing events to rounds 1 and 5, and ways to score points to rounds 2, 3, and 4. This provides another layer of challenge as you will need to adjust your strategies each round, and plan how to best use the rule changes to your advantage.The final part of the expansion is the events module. When playing with events included, tiles are drawn at the beginning of the game and placed over the day numbers that Vesh’s boat travels along. On each day the drawn event tile must be resolved. The Beasts expansion comes with some stunning artwork on the tiles. It’s simple to add in as you can only take a beast on the first turn, after that play continues in the same way as before.
