Kilimanjaro is the debut album by the neo-psychedelic Liverpool band The Teardrop Explodes, released on 10 October 1980. This does not make it a unique record, but his early puritanical phase had lasted until most of the way through the recording of Kilimanjaro, and by now he was making up for years of chemical sobriety. The fact that this time the bonus material has its own CD (unlike the previous release) allows the album to end beautifully with this last song, one of Cope's finest.

The band's next single, "Bouncing Babies", inspired a tribute song of its own: "I Can't Get Bouncing Babies by the Teardrop Explodes" by The Freshies, an ode to the difficulty of obtaining a copy of the song. Whereas Kilimanjaro is a masterpiece that charms with its rough edges and never pauses for breath, Wilder sounds substantially more polished, moving from psychedelic pop to synth-based experimentation. The Teardrop Explodes, which had been compiled by Balfe from the abortive third album sessions and the "You Disappear From View" EP tracks. The band then undertook an extensive tour of Europe, the US and Australia, hiring trumpeter Ted Emmett (ex- 64 Spoons) for the live band. Some tracks featured a full group sound as featured on Kilimanjaro (most notably "Passionate Friend", the only single release and album track to feature the band's ill-fated US touring members Alfie Agius and Jeff Hammer) but in general the album broke away from the West Coast/beat group sound of the debut as well as having a noticeably more downbeat and troubled atmosphere.The playing gives a true lightness of being to songs with deep Krautrock ties and/or hazy connections to the 13th Floor Elevators. citation needed] Cope composed and controlled the mixing so the production and recording was done more than once to achieve the frantic pace he wanted.

Wilder is the second album by neo-psychedelic Liverpool band the Teardrop Explodes, and the final completed album released by the group.It seems a fair enough query given Kilimanjaro's success: it spawned a top 10 hit in Reward, spent 35 weeks on the charts and displayed such commercial promise that both U2 and Duran Duran apparently considered the Teardrop Explodes their only real competition. In March, the band played their first American dates (a time also notable for Cope's meeting with Dorian Beslity, who would later become his second wife).

The higher you build it, the further removed you are from the reality that it’s actually moving and going to fall. Cope found the tour "disastrous and demeaning": he performed most of it in a self-destructive sulk, raging at his audience, and quit the group immediately afterwards.
