If you want a small Echo that can, really, be put anywhere, and like to get visual information as well as auditory, this is our preferred Echo Dot, and it’s not that much more expensive than the version without a clock. Finally, something which promises to be big but sadly isn’t available in the UK at the time of writing. Our best-sounding Echo Dot yet - Echo Dot features improved speaker quality, delivering clearer vocals and deeper bass for rich vibrant sound.

The Echo Dot with Clock has long been my favorite small smart speaker, and with these improvements, it’s now my go-to smart alarm clock.It can only show a few characters at a time, so you have to stand there for 30 seconds to read a song title and artist when you could simply ask Alexa to name the song. An odd case in point: the new Echo Dot has a new temperature sensor built in, so you’d think getting a temperature reading from it should be easy, right? The Echo Dot can help make your everyday routine (and entertainment) more seamless with voice control.

The sound is fired out from the fabric sides of the new Dot, instead of the plastic top of the old model, projecting sound further into the room making it much better for music. Ask Alexa to find the perfect playlist or podcast, and you’ll have something to listen to when you cook in the kitchen, lounge on the couch, or work out in your living room. If you live in an apartment, you probably don't have a fancy split system, but an old-fashioned window AC. I could also speak to Alexa while listening to my Q Acoustics reference system at a reasonable level.Speaking of connectivity, weirdly enough, you can't configure this new Echo Dot with an older generation Dot in a stereo setup. Playing Greta Van Fleet’s Zeppelin-esque operatic ballad Meeting The Master is a stern test for a small speaker, but the dynamics, range and balance of presentation are impressive, and while you’ll get a far superior experience on more dedicated hi-fi speakers, this is an admirable effort from a budget-friendly smart speaker. We’ve been using these Alexa devices in our home for months, testing them out with a bunch of different use cases. You’ll still receive space-filling sound in smaller rooms around your house, even if the Echo Dot starts to struggle and distort whenever the knob gets turned towards the upper echelons. It won’t beat larger speakers, but for the money it sounds pretty good, edging out Google’s Home Mini.
