About this deal

When the mystery was solved at the end of Lois Lenz, Lesbian Secretary, I thought it was a bit silly. That, plus the student-teacher affairs, is what made this a three-star book instead of four—all the atmosphere and lead up was a great ton of fun, but the end felt kind of rushed and nonsensical. I’m sure it’s because I’m a woman, but not having men around really does make a big difference in terms of feeling safe in an environment.

In reality, Elaine says, she will keep sneaking off to have sex with Bobby and marry some guy with even more money! Early '60s sleaze pulp, somewhat haphazardly packaged, with a note that "neither the [cover] photograph nor the words accompanying photograph describe, or is meant to be understood as, the actual personality or conduct of the model. While it had a lot of the same campy snark and 50's "gay" double entendre references, it was missing something for me that Lois Lenz had. It reminds me a lot of Beautiful Ape Girl Baby, and how Fowler used humor to address close-mindedness in our society. Monica Nolan does some fun world building when Miss Watkins, the guidance counselor from the beginning of the book, runs into Bobby while she is with Netta Bean, one of the main characters of Lois Lenz! Bobby Blanchard is an enjoyable read, one that I was happier to pick up and read to my husband each night than Lois Lenz, Lesbian Secretary. Coach Marino gave us a pep talk before we got off the bus, reminding us to swing fast and to always keep our eyes on the ball.

We took a bus to the elimination game, fidgeting in our seats and wondering out loud if the other team was any good. The new field hockey team with most inexperienced players that Bobby put together at Metamora that keeps winning — because terrible “accidents” happen to the other teams’ players. There is no shame in the characters regarding their sexuality, but the 1964 setting means society may have something to say about two women (and at one point there is a raid on a lesbian bar).

Coach Marino’s balanced attitude was a welcome break from the harassment I received from other adults in my life. Early in the book Bobby meets up with her girlfriend, Elaine, a young woman who refuses to be seen in public with Bobby. The mysteries were a fun element to the book that gave the characters something to do other than experience the drama of a high school that happens to be oddly absent of straight people. I was not a good softball player, and my lack of skill meant that I was placed permanently in the outfield where the ball rarely came my way.Miss Watkins, a guidance counselor (who was the guidance counselor in Lois Lenz, Lesbian Secretary) visits Bobby in the hospital and reminds the sad athlete of her teaching credentials — and says there is an opening for a gym teacher at Metamora Academy for girls!

With a fearsome field hockey team to build and the suspicious death of the former Math Mistress to solve, Bobby Blanchard has her hands full. Besides her laid-back demeanor, there was another difference between Coach Marino and my other female teachers that I did not have the words to articulate. I was worried things would veer into cheesy territory, but it never got beyond the kind of campy that had to come with this kind of story. I remember getting hit in the stomach with a soccer ball and I remember doing laps around the field in the pouring rain. Little does she know that in her new job as Games Mistress at Metamora Academy, she will unearth more than one girl's hidden abilities and spur some ardent rivalry between pupils and teachers, both on and off the hockey field.Roberta "Bobby" Blanchard is crushed when an accident forces her to leave the glamorous world of professional field hockey.
