About this deal

The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is rapidly incoming, and it’s an exciting time for fans of endless warfare in the 41st Millennium. Over the last few weeks, you’ve learned a bit about how Chapter Approved games offer matched play missions and different victory conditions in the new edition, so it’s time for the next of the flagship game modes – Combat Patrol.

Sternguard Veterans are among the best marksmen in the galaxy, turning decades of active service into a well-drilled set of skills that make them some of the most flexible and reliable members of the 1st Company. This multi-option set of five plastic miniatures includes loads of weapon options and detail parts, including a choice of combi-weapon or Sternguard bolt rifle for each veteran, a heavy bolter, and the brand new pyrecannon.** Lieutenant GW has used two methods to attempt to balance the boxes against one another. First,although the models in the box set may have many weapon options, there’s a particular loadout you’re supposed to equip your models with. Chaos Space Marines eShorts With those additions we’re at 520 points before Wargear. With the one Combat Patrol that’s a total of 1025 points before wargear. Now, with all those Marines, you might want some transports. A CSM Rhino is going to be 80 points base and we’ll toss in a pair for the two units of Chaos Marines running around. That’s another 160 points before Wargear. The Thousand Sons one is pretty similar to the Hexfire box, so if you grabbed that one this might still have some value for you. It is a little strange just because it has so many Tzaangors and it’s basically the same as the Hexfire box but with 10 more Tzaangors added in.

First off, the Chaos Space Marines look great, their overall aesthetic hasn’t changed much over the years and it hasn’t needed to. They’re an imposing force to deal with, much like their Space Marine kin, but with some extra cruelty mixed in for good measure. This is an excellent starter box for those that want to turn worship the Chaos gods. The mix of troops allows for players to try different tactics and play styles to see what they prefer. And, like many of the other Combat Patrol boxes, each unit will become mainstays in your army even as it grows. Are They Difficult To Paint? Overall, of all the Combat Patrol Boxes, the new Genestealer Cults is a pretty good value in terms of both pricing and selection of models. Much of what was mentioned for the Ancient applies to the Guard as well. Keep them within 6″ of the Captain and the Ancient and you’ll have one big scary melee ball of pain. Every faction’s army rules will remain largely the same – Tyranids retain Shadow in the Warp and Synapse , for example – but each Combat Patrol features Enhancements unique to this game mode to let you tweak your WARLORD and try out new strategies. So is this Combat Patrol worth it? If you missed out on the Leviathan box and want those Space Marines I think it’s probably worth it. That said…I don’t know how competitive this Combat Patrol really is. The Space Marines DID lose the campaign and these models were featured in it. Kind of a sad state of things when your Terminators and freakin’ Flamer marines couldn’t kill a bunch of lightly armored Tyranids…(and I say that as a Tyranid player).

The majority of datasheets have been modified, both to adapt units that would be overpowered in this format, but also to slim down more complex units to one defining rule and ensure players can master the key abilities of their units before discovering their full potential in larger games. Also remember that you can use the Space Marine codex stratagem Unyielding in the Face of the Foe which, for 1 cp allows them to add +1 to their armour saves against weapons with damage 1. SANGUINARY ANCIENT A Sanguinary Ancient with Sanguinary Guard On paper I think this army could surprise people just because it’s not a build you’d expect to see. Vanguard Space Marine forces aren’t exactly tearing-up the meta though…so this is more of a fun challenge project than the next big GT winner. You have been warned. In addition to your mission’s shared primary objective, every Combat Patrol can also choose between a pair of secondary objectives that let you define how you play. They operate as an ‘elite’ army in Warhammer 40k, meaning they tend to field fewer miniatures than their opponents for the same budget of points, but each model can hope to deal out more punishment to the enemy before it gets blown away. Brave, honest and true, they only very occasionally indulge in macabre vampiric rituals with goblets of suspiciously viscous red ‘wine’– and it really is only once in a blue moon that one of them slips into an insane, suicidal killing frenzy fuelled by the overwhelming psychic grief imprinted in his DNA. Combat Patrol: Necrons is an elite contingent of living metal warriors with a burning desire to return the galaxy to a state of cold stasis, including 10 Necron Warriors, three Skorpekh Destroyers, a Canoptek Doomstalker, and three Canoptek Scarab Swarms, all ready to do battle under the command of the implacable Necron Overlord Amonhotekh. Personally, I would have rather GW swapped out the Infernus Marines for the Sternguard and just made this a “First Company” box or something. Now that would have been an interesting Combat Patrol! Combat Patrol uses simpler, one-side versions of the datasheet. You’ll also notice the red flash at the top of the Combat Patrol sheets – so you know you’re using the right one

It’s also looking distinctly chaotic on Warhammer+ this week, with Battle Report showing a clash between the Sons of Horus and the Imperial Fists to demonstrate the new rules for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. There’s also a Citadel Colour Masterclass on smoke effects, while the lore from Psychic Awakening books 4 and 5 come to the Warhammer Vault. To keep things balanced, the weapons options for the units have been fixed for all the Combat Patrol datasheets, so there’s no need to fret about your character and unit equipment prior to a game. You don’t need to worry about which guns to give your Chaos Space Marine Havocs, for example.
