About this deal

As they launch each new generation, the quality and specifications of the displays seem to leap forward. BenQ monitors are the workhorses of the imaging display world, cheaper than the likes of Eizo and NEC but still able to provide outstanding display quality. Another feature that I like about the design is that the stand upright features a handle. This handle makes it easy to move from one desk to another. The stand also features plenty of adjustment and a hole to poke all the cables through to keep things tidy. BenQ offers their Palette Master Element software which helps you to set-up and maintains the quality of your display. The SW321C is the latest large scale monitors, and it’s a decent bit of kit. The exterior is kept simple with the monitor arriving as the screen, two-part stand and hood. The BenQ SW321C has two (2) HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and one USB Type-C port. Because the cables for each are included, connecting couldn’t possibly be easier. It also has two (2) USB Type-A (output), one USB Type-B and a 3.5mm (audio output) ports.

A pro-level 4K photo monitor at a very accessible price

A LUT (Look Up Table) contains precalculated sets of values that are used to apply transformations to the input color data so that the resulting data meets certain (the desired) visual standard and color accuracy. For example, LUT can be used to emulate/map different color spaces and gamma settings. Many professional monitors as well as some TVs have programmable internal LUTs allowing more control over the image. There’s still some good arguments for using HD/QHD res monitors for photo editing, but 4K combined with an expanded color space reproduction represents a big step up in terms of more accurate rendering with finer tolerances and, in turn, access to more precise editing control. BenQ builds on this with the SW321C’s significantly improved uniformity of both color and brightness – and across a big display area too – plus the very effective ART anti-glare coating. It also offers excellent repeatability and reliability via hardware calibration, the convenience of USB-C connectivity and the potential for even more from the nascent Paper Color Sync function. At the heart of the SW321C is a 32-inch (708.48 x 398.52mm) 4K display with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This equates to a crisp 137ppi and 0.1845 dot pitch. The 10-bit wide-gamut IPS display boasts excellent colour space coverage - 100% sRGB, 99% AdobeRGB - particularly impressive - and 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 video color space (the cinematic equivalent of sRGB). Wide 178/178-degree viewing angles promise accurate contrast regardless of your viewing position, helped by an anti-glare and anti-reflective coating. A 5ms response time is more than fast enough for photographic applications, as is the maximum 250cd/m2 brightness.

After calibrating with a Datacolor Spyder X Elite colorimeter, the SW321C managed an even more impressive Delta-E of 0.63 - this is about as good a result as you can expect to see without spending considerably more money. Color vibrancy, contrast and brightness are all excellent to the naked eye, and although the outright maximum brightness is a fairly mediocre 250cd/m2, you really don't need any extra brightness for serious image editing, as highlight detail will start to blow out. In fact, when calibrating, 120cd/m2 is considered optimal brightness. The monitor’s connection bay includes a USB-C port which, among other things, provides the convenience of a one-cable connection to the computer when performing hardware calibration (and has 60 watts power available). Overall the results were good and reflected how it felt to use the monitor. The surprising result considering the size of the screen was the uniformity for luminance and colour, which was excellent across the board. During the set-up process, there were a couple of points that stood out. While my studio space gives me more room than most to move and shift kit around, my desk space is still relatively limited.
