I loved reading so much it was consciously integrated into my identity -- the, maybe, tertiary source of how I knew myself, even. We've gotten the best start, a well thought out solid one, that will serve us well through the entire series. Her peaceful existence on the Ark of Anima is disrupted when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, from the powerful Dragon clan.

With surgical precision, Christelle Dabos has created a hybrid world between fantasy and the Belle Époque. A best seller in France, Dabos's debut novel evokes both the whimsy and the deep-seated sense of justice of the Harry Potter series. Metaphors of personal and/or inner disconnect, asymmetry, and imbalance made to be able to be utilized in material instrumentation was another really cool concept; the idea of our own contradictions and multitudes made to be a fuel for real power and consequence, imagined as a matter disposable for exploitation, was genuinely cool. When against her wishes she is betrothed to a man on another Ark, Ophelia has to leave her secure and loving home and travel to a cold and desolate ark to marry him. Over the gradual span of assimilating Ophelia's and Thorn's own process of piecing together their reality, there were some things that genuinely struck me.When Berenilde tortures her and Thorn asks her about it, she chooses not to tell him, for reasons that are eerily similar to Harry Potter’s when he was being tortured by Dolores Umbridge. A lot of the story is focused on her learning about the Pole and its people after being thrust into a place she knows nothing about.

An unforgettable heroine, a rich and bountiful universe, intrigue and suspense: A Winter's Promise is perfect for readers of Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens , Melissa Albert's The Hazel Wood , V.
