Lady Janet’s Tower: The tower on the eastern headland of Ruby Bay was built in 1770 for Lady Janet Anstruther, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Elie merchant and a regular swimmer in the waters around Elie Ness. Go visit and find out the full local story. A museum dedicated to keeping the heritage of Crail and the East Neuk of Fife alive. Displays include exhibits from Crail’s fishing industry, its airfield, and its kirk. Elie Ruby Beach: The most idyllic of settings – this beach has won awards and definitely worth a visit, or pop to one of the local delis and have a romantic picnic!

The pool was left ravaged for decades; however, in 2021, it was reopened, and now it is the place to go for a dip in Pittenweem. Next along the coast is St Monans, probably the quirkiest of all the East Neuk villages and named after Saint Monan – who was martyred on the Isle of May out in the Forth and set up a chapel in the East Neuk. Elie Ness Lighthouse Standing at the tip of Elie Ness, Elie Ness Lighthouse has been guiding vessels through the treacherous waters around the Forth of Firth for almost 120 years and is now a very popular subject for photographers. Built in response to pleas from mariners who were unable to see the warning flashes from the lighthouses on the Isle of May and Inchkeith during stormy weather, a beam of white light has been shining from the top of Elie Ness Lighthouse every six seconds since 1908. Although it’s only a third of a mile in length it’ll take at least an hour to complete as it’s such hard going – but you’ll need a good head for heights and parents should be aware it’s not suitable for young children.I’d heard great things about The Ship Inn in Elie but unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to go this time around. I’m planning a longer visit here later on in the year so this will definitely be on the agenda. This time around we only had time for ice cream! Not only pretty, but there’s also heaps to do in Elie. With miles of Fife coastline to explore, fantastic beaches, watersports, and excellent eateries, plus places like Pittenweem and Crailnearby, Elie is a perfect summer spot. From the harbour, you can take a trip on the May Princess to the Isle of May, a National Nature Reserve and home to the UK’s largest puffin colony and lots of grey seals. The boat trip will take you around 4-5 hours and includes 2-3 hours to explore the island. The East Neuk of Fife is one of those areas that are always overlooked by overseas visitors, yet it’s one of the best places to visit in the entire southeast of Scotland. You can walk the full East Neuk section from Elie to Cambo sands in one day or slow down and take a shorter walk such as Elie to Anstruther.Michelin-Starred The Cellar is a cosy eatery that has flourished under the head chef, Billy Boyter. From Edinburgh catch bus no. X60 in the direction from St Andrews. The bus will drop you at Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, and Anstruther.
