Building and construction trades use a lot of 8’ x 4’ and 10’ x 4’ MDF sheets, so nearly all moisture resistant MDF in these sheet sizes will be green or have a green core. Skirting, door architraves and cornices were all devised when walls were wet plastered and not as smooth as today. The plaster finish was rough and needed a junction (stop edge) at the floor and ceilings. The skirting function was therefore intended to hide the junction at the bottom of the plastered wall. The skirting also hid the damp in houses before damp proof courses became the norm.

Use a small brush to apply paint at the extremities of the surface and into any intricate mouldings. Take care not to let the paint pool in crevices where it will slowly sag or drip while it dries.Made from coniferous trees, such as pine, cedar and fir, softwood boards offer a characterful solution. Opting for skirting boards in a lighter or darker colour to the walls If all other avenues have been explored, it will be well worth looking at improving the breathability of your floors.Alternatively, for a bolder aesthetic, go all out by choosing a skirting board colour that stands out intensely against your walls and/or floors. Create a striking contemporary look by twinning primary coloured skirting boards with walls and floors in shades of grey.
