In the year 2020, Earth's magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases. What follows is An Zhe’s struggle to find his spore against Lu Feng’s attention all while humanity continues to struggle to survive. “Humankind's interests take precedence over all else” and An Zhe bears witness to this as he watches countless people die. Judgement Day has arrived and the Arbiter must bear that weight.

8. The Little Mushroom

There's a few points that don't quite make this book a 5 stars to me. Book two has a lot of science talk that I struggled to grasp as a non-science person. I was incredibly invested in the main pairing's relationship but although I liked their romance, it didn't feel "romantic" to me. The epilogue chapters were also a bit confusing to read in terms of writing style and I felt like they could have been developed more. Until the day humanity falls." In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe. An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless―as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot. But An Zhe's mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng's eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds… Lu Feng's faith has never wavered, but while he can fool the spectators with his façade, the human psyche and heart torture the body and soul of their host to remind him that he cannot lie to himself. An Zhe saw Lu Feng lower his gun and expressionlessly wipe down his gun while leaning against the wall, seeming to not care about anything" (197).

anyway, 3 stars for an zhe and mr. pauli for being the only characters who felt like people and who i could get attached to. and also for the plot concluding in a satisfying way. It is against this monumental reality of cataclysm that An Zhe’s innocent search for his spore unfolds, and because he’s a literal mushroom, with a rudimentary and somewhat naive understanding of good and evil or of what propels humans to do the things they do, there is very little space for the endless self-justifying impulse of “human interest”. In a little mushroom’s rendering of the world, the ugliness—that is to say, all the details of struggle and survival—is stark and unflinching, with nothing to hide behind. What we are ultimately left with is a haunted and haunting portrait of what we do to one another in our desperate grasping to unmake our undoing. The quilt, pillow, and bedsheets were all the base's standard issue, with no differences whatsoever from the bedding of the underground prison. However, let Lu Feng think he was still alive in the wilderness. The Judge had seen too many deaths.” This review is very spoiler filled and very stream of consciousness—i mostly wrote it in my notes app throughout reading.

Even the side characters throughout this novel felt so 3-dimensional, like Doussay, Mr. Shaw, Hubbard, Dr. Ji, Jenson, Colin, and my favourite of the side characters, Seraing. I feel like Seraing is the type to say “hun” a lot. He gives motherly energy, even though he’s training to be an Arbiter and shoots loads of people in the last chapter. He can do crazy violence, but also be affectionate- get yourself a man that can do both! at first, it's a bit slow-paced, narrating the stories of the survivors outside the base, which then suddenly turned into an angst that kept me on the edge of my seat, and just like the first book, i read this within a day. i just can't get enough of the superb worldbuilding, the political strife, humanity's struggle for survival, and humanity's kindness, which our little mushroom learned to adapt together with developing his feelings with lu feng :3 I… won’t give it to you.” He reached out to protect his belly, his voice trembling violently as he cried out intermittently, “I hate… you.”

Truly, one of my favorite dynamics. But here it’s especially interesting. Lu Feng is the most terrifying man on the human base. If he deems you a risk, he will shoot you on the spot—no reason given. However, it’s clear from his first official meeting with An Zhe that the man knows more than anyone can imagine and that he does in fact care. If he didn’t, he would’ve shot An Zhe on sight. And it’s those little things that make this ship compelling—Lu Feng will show An Zhe his reasons. He will slow down when An Zhe asks for it. He will accept his inventions, answer his questions, and listen to his explanations. And for the cold man who everyone is terrified of, those little things make him very warm toward An Zhe. However, in a sci-fi apocalypse setting, there’s usually a “man vs. nature-gone-wrong” element that makes such a scenario more…nuanced, I guess? That is, if you’ve actually got zombies or people turning into flesh-eating bugs, then the “shoot as soon as you know they’re infected” approach makes more sense.A breeze blew at that moment, rustling the dark hair. He watched it. A chill seeped into his bones and shivered down his spine. Finally, with a sigh, An Zhe straightened out his legs and hopped down from the roof. It would have been a more painful impact, jumping from the height of the car, had two arms not immediately circled his waist and caught him as he descended. An Zhe frowned.
