We know that this family is not going to be so welcoming to a trans girl if they were to find out about her past. So I understand the reviews before mine, that they liked the story and I agree, it could have been a refreshment to lesbian story lines, because of the new concept of telling relationships between lesbian women.Each brings a slightly different perspective, because, unsurprisingly, trans people are just as diverse and prone to disagreement as any other group of people.

She needs to make new friends, figure out who she can trust, figure out who she is and who wants to be, and figure out how to date a teenage boy when her dad doesn’t fully approve. Moving to a new school, for any reason, in one’s senior year can be tough, especially when that school is in a different town and involves living with a dad you haven’t seen in six years. It focuses on a trans character living their life without any interruption for the most part, which is something i’ve not read before. We are The Little Contemporary Corner, made up of Sarah and Sophie, best friend book bloggers from Manchester.She knows from before just how cruel and violent people can be when they know the truth, and doesn't want to not only lose the new people in her life, but lose the life she currently has; with passing so easily, no-one has any clue about Amanda's past, so as long as no-one knows, she can simply be. I’m really happy that it’s part of Zoella’s book club because hopefully that means more people will read it, because it really is that special. And keep in mind: this is only Russo's first novel; if there's any justice in the world, we're all witnessing a YA powerhouse in the making.

Russo’s characters are seldom one-dimensional: each has their own issues or struggles, with parents or school or whatnot; and each has their own lines of cleavage. Some characters i didn’t connect with, some plots i found a little bit out of the blue and unnecessary. But after only a half hour of the audiobook, I realized this was not a book written just to educate - it’s a story that stands all on its own.THEN the next round of Zoella’s Book Club was announced and you’ll never guess which was the first book on the list? And I think this segment was meant as education for cis readers to really understand how awful life can be for trans women, which is really important, don’t get me wrong. She definitely creates a feeling of universal sympathy - because it's hard trying to fit in, learning to accept yourself, and finding someone to love you - but she feels, perhaps deliberately, like a blank canvas. So Bee’s reaction, her attempt to let Amanda set the boundaries while also showing that she is open to learning (instead of making assumptions), is refreshing.
