Jane and Maura dig deep into solving a homicide and its connection to a random hit-and-run of a young girl who is being stalked.

Gerritsen kept me turning the pages as I kept trying to figure out where the heck this was going to end up.

Bonus points for the ringtone allocated to Angela on Jane’s phone and the reveal of Maura’s secret talent. Adding to the mystery is the stalking of a female college student who turns out to have been a patient of Ms. She may be a grandmother, not a police detective, but she's savvy enough to know there's something very strange, perhaps even dangerous, about the new neighbours across the street. I generally really love a story that gives me a great sense of place, and I don’t get that with this book, or with too many of the others in this series, now that I think of it. Only reason for 4 star is that it still lacks the X factor of her previous books but enjoyable none the less.

I’ve always loved how she fills this series with such strong, nuanced and familiar female characters that are richly drawn and easy to like. Besonders nervtötend fand ich die wechselnden Erzählperspektiven (Jane, Angela, Maura und Amy, eine der Protagonistinnen).

Alternating POVs, we hear from Jane (detective), Maura (medical examiner), Angela (Jane's mom), and Amy (small part, a victim of a hit and run). But what really grabs her attention is the couple who move in across the street, rebuff her offer of friendship, unpack their U-Haul after dark, and keep their blinds closed: what are they hiding? Bestselling author Tess Gerritsen is also a physician, and she brings to her novels her first-hand knowledge of emergency and autopsy rooms.This was a very entertaining read as you ride along with Jane and try to figure out what did Sofia know? Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles are working the murder of 52-year-old Sofia Suarez. It almost broke the concentration every time mother got involved but as the story continued you could feel where it was headed.

Some of the more intriguing parts of the book, though, are the sections told through the eyes of the mysterious hit-and-run victim Amy. Jane’s case was puzzling and I had as tough a time figuring out the connection to that cold case as she did. Despite an absence of a number of years I found it easy to step back into Rizzoli and Isles’ world, the characters feeling like old friends. Rizzoli and Isles has been one of my favourite crime series’, and Tess Gerritsen one of my favourite authors, since I borrowed The Surgeon from the library almost twenty years ago.

Despite Angie’s careful attention to everything going on around her, she still manages to grasp the wrong end of several sticks, getting herself into hot water. Their blinds are drawn, they rarely leave the house, they don’t interact or socialise with anyone, nor receive any visitors. It has been five years since the last book; however, no worries about reading the past books; you will catch up and can be read as a standalone.
