TCL and Hisense add a pair of stereo speakers, with decent sound quality, to their TVs for you to watch movies all day long!

As a result, the A6200 actually sounds very good for a 50-inch budget TV, despite the use of a pair of downward-firing drivers. There’s 7W of amplification for each speaker, and while that might not sound like a lot, it’s sufficient for most TV viewing. Everyone else gets on with the job of making their TVs look as discreet and unassuming as possible, using materials that are entirely dictated by the price point they’re trying to hit. And so it is with the Hisense A6G. While this isn’t surprising for a budget TV, it doesn’t necessarily mean the HDR performance will be bad – as long as the tone-mapping is good. When it comes to HDR10 content, the A6G mapped the colours quite well but was clearly clipping the highlights. This is fairly common with 4,000 and 10,000 nits content, but the A6G was also clipping images graded at 1,000 nits.

Surprising performance and great value

Hisense likes to keep you on your toes where smart TV is concerned – some of its models use Android TV, some use Roku TV… the A6G uses the company’s proprietary VIDAA U5 interface. And as far as it goes, VIDAA U5 isn’t bad: it’s clean, logical, easily customised and has an okay selection of catch-up and streaming service apps. But it doesn’t really go far enough, certainly not where the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV are concerned – neither are included here.

There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. There’s a comprehensive set of calibration controls included in the menus, but clearly at this price point no-one is going to pay for a professional calibration. So it’s good to know that even without one, the Hisense is incredibly accurate. Naturally there are other picture modes for those who prefer their images brighter or more saturated, but if you want to watch TV shows and movies as the content creators intended, then the A6200 has got you covered. Between the HDMI inputs and the smart TV interface, it’s the work of a moment to get some native 4K content on board. And thanks to set-up menus that are either mercifully brief or frustratingly restricted (depending on your point of view), it won’t be long before you’ve achieved the most pleasing picture balance available. Having access to Google Play Store also means that you can get any new streaming apps on your TV since Play Store is constantly updated and there is hardly any app not found on it.
