Underneath its brilliantly colored, highly stylized surfaces, this key work of 1980s French cinema is a heartrending portrait of a woman struggling to both inhabit and reject traditionally feminine roles. Then again, the show’s poignancy comes across well in some of the ballads, especially ‘Magic Fingers’ in the first half and ‘The Kind of Man I Am’ in the second. it's amusing at times, erotic at others, but overall the story it tells is so insubstantial that you wonder what exactly compelled Beineix to tell it. Over an hour of extra footage significantly shifts the balance of the film, though it manages remarkably well to sustain its atmosphere throughout and there is a delightful sequence in which Anglade disguises himself as a woman to undertake a robbery that's well worth catching.

Most of the novel is taken up with their life together – Betty’s outbursts when a publisher rejects Zorg’s novel, her joy at being pregnant and her gloom when she finds she is not, while Zorg tries to keep things calm, knowing that Betty has made his life worth living but that, eventually, she is going to do something which is going to give him a lot of problems.
