This was easily one of my favorite books this year, with Ms. Kelly being one of my favorite authors. She has most certainly done it again. Bravo. The concept of designing a garden, then its restoration is a very original premise. And I was looking forward to those two stories. But I didn’t feel that the designing and restoration process came through in those two stories. They were more absorbed by something else. At the end, the story I expected the least from turned out to be the most interesting. This video talks about the work of the Royal Horticultural Society and the Lemon Tree Trust. A hundred years on from providing seeds to WWI prisoners of war, the Lemon Tree Trust worked with the RHS to supply seeds to Syrian refugees in Domiz camp, Kurdistan region of Iraq:When we say that something is wrong, that something isn't doing much work. It's the wrong that does the heavy lifting. There's a lot of nuance in there, a whole spectrum. And beyond the visible range – familiar aches, homely traumas – it turns out there's a whole other domain.

Even our stone age ancestors, who’d only recently acquired pots to piss in, they got this particular memo. Zara tends to a garden in a war-torn city. It is the last garden. She has many helpers who seek solace by helping her in her garden. They then all have to evacuate, but they return once war is over and Zara sees her garden again. I have been a huge fan of Ms. Kelly for quite a while now. I loved her previous two books: The Light Over London and The Whispers of War. When I saw that she had a new book coming out, I knew I had to read it. And it most certainly did not disappoint. You see the guy scan the shelves. Gray's Anatomy , which feels a little central casting, but that detail is right too. It's all accurate. You see him look out the window. Despite loving historical fiction, I'm sorry to say this one did not do much for me. Perhaps it's because I'm not a gardener. Despite what the book description promises, I did not find this either "poignant" or "unforgettable".

I also enjoyed seeing the different roles women had during the war - land girl, cook, nurse, business owner, wealthy estate owner - and appreciated the depth and complexity Kelly gives her protagonists as they face daunting issues of war and self-discovery.

The too-many POVs were a bit disorienting at first. It took quite a bit to get to know the characters, but once I got my bearings with the characters, I fell in love with them. Another book club read that forced me out of my typical genre. I am now in love with gardens and cannot wait to explore this spring/summer. The bees dazed in the apricot light, the butterflies carefully flinching. That’s what I’ll remember, when the time comes. They say that drowning is peaceful, once you stop struggling. But you stop struggling because drowning makes struggling impossible. It’s not that you surrender.

I didn’t get around to planting that rose, not right away. I dug the hole, though. When you’re planting a rose, you want a hole about twice the size of the root ball. It’s a good idea to dust it with fertiliser. Fish, blood and bone, ideally. Again, gardening is mainly about death.
