About this deal

It certainly wasn’t the first dungeon crawler, but Diablo was one of the most influential. Players take on the role of an adventurer seeking to rid the town of Tristram of the evil that plagues it. In the dank and darkened halls of a nearby cathedral, they find hordes of skeletons, fiends, and other horrors that threaten the mortal plane.

You then get the option to customise the character. A Cleric could choose a +1 or +2 to IQ, a Barbarian could take up to +4 to ST. All of this sits on top of the point buy system – so the Barbarian gets to select 40 points of options, the Cleric 45 points of options. By the end of it, everyone has a 250 point GURPS character. The body of work is so large, in fact, that I’m confident that there are exceptions to everything that follows but nevertheless we carry on. It’s reasonable to expect that a “generic” Dungeon Fantasy varies on a theme of exploration into dangerous places, violent encounters, and the acquisition of anything sufficiently shiny. A layer of moral justification is typically applied to keep this from being mere armed robbery. If life is not made sufficiently miserable for The Forces of Evil then the world will be a worse place. Those who would ask you to take on this dangerous, profitable, and enjoyable burden are justified in their request, like the farmers begging the aid of Seven Samurai. Core Keeper has players taking the role of a protagonist that awakens deep underground in a mysterious cavern. Trapped and no signs of help, players must rely on their survival skills. Some confusion exists with the Dungeon Fantasy RPG which is not preceded with "GURPS" in titles even though it uses a GURPS-based rules system. There isn’t the selection of complicated spells that you always get in D&D/Pathfinder – they spells seem to be simpler and more basic. But then, a lot of time has been wasted in games trying to understand just how some spells work in Pathfinder, since their descriptions are often not entirely clear.

Shadows of Amn is a bit more accessible and features faster-paced and more fluid combat to appeal to a larger audience.
