This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. While the resultant set, released in 1994, does quite hit the same dizzying heights, it remains a thoroughly great album.
The inter band friction created some gems; "Inertia Creeps" is drenched in menace, and "Teardrop" features the ethereal vocals of Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins - both of these a benchmark not just for the band, but for the trip-hop genre.Review: By the time they headed into the studio to record Protection, Massive Attack were still riding high on the success of their peerless debut album, Blue Lines.
Universal Music will issue a 20th anniversary reissue of Massive Attack‘s third studio album Mezzanine.Every record is shipped in original factory-applied shrink wrap and has never been touched by human hands. Never seen a copy of the original pressing which is not off-centre on one side of the first disc and often the second as well. The cds are black plastic, which initially worried me, but fortunately my old Technics CD player plays both fine.
