About this deal

The pedaling-friendly knee protection segment has grown dramatically over the last few years, and there are now dozens of options that are designed to be worn all day without causing discomfort. Just as an aside, the EN1621-1 certification allows a residual force of 3.5 tonnes (presumably over any amount of surface area? I couldn't find more info so please let me know what's up). That's still quite a bit. Oh, and they may not fit the best under all pairs of pants. That rubbing the knee feeling, I get earlier when its winter and I'm wearing my Endura Spray pants. The pad does extend quite a way up your thigh, and it's worth consulting their sizing chart, which was accurate for me. The grippers do a thorough job without leaving any marks or soreness on the skin.

According to POC, the VPD Air Legs is a pull-on knee pad aimed at riders looking for minimal padding and protection, but with high-level comfort and breathability. To achieve this, the knee pad combines a lightweight material body but with a high-tech VPD protective insert. Considering the protection and coverage I think they're perfectly reasonable in terms of how they retain heat. I also like how far along past the knee they extend. The area of coverage is far bigger than many other pedal-ready pads. The supplementary side padding is a welcome appendage, even if it isn't as burly as the main insert. There is around 10 mm of shared overlapped coverage before the padding in the sleeve extends 15 mm further than the outer edge of the harder and stiffer insert. A hard shell ​(think DH/motocross helmet) - has an outer shell made typically of Carbon, Glass Fibre or ABS. The shell protects the EPS foam core from puncture and absorbs energy on impact. A typical micro shell helmet (think XC/trail/road helmet) does not have a substantial outer shell, as a consequence provides inferior protection.

We tested the Sam Hill in size L. For reference, here are relevant leg measurements of this tester: Thigh circumference (measured 15cms above the knee): 470mm, calf circumference (measured 10cms below the knee): 380mm. Things That Could Be Improved The protection has been good but sliding crashes have not been good, that's what killed my first set, I slid on a gravelly trail and it pulled the pad down and ripped the upper cuff to shreds. Had a pretty good scrape from that, but I'm sure it would have been a lot worse without them. Had a couple other big crashes and was very thankful I was wearing them. The smart insert adds around 30 percent to the cost, but the great fit of the VPD Air Legs – albeit with a gripper that's slightly too tight –makes that much easier to live with. So if you want lightweight trail protection and POC’s fabled build quality, this is the pad for you.

Protection level: These pads offer light to moderate protection and exceed the CE EN 1621-1:2012 Level 2 standards. The first option is a hardshell elbow guard that features tough plastic panels. This style is preferable for gravity-orientated riding, including downhill and park riding, because it provides protection against serious impacts. I have both of these. The Sam Hill's are what I ride with. Protection is great but the pad itself doesn't have that much width coverage tho. Those little side pads are literally just the most basic, soft foam. No protection there other than abrasion and very slight bumps. Plus the seam between the main pad will leave you bloody in a crash as it creates a gap between the pad and little foamy spots (its not impact foam, just basic foam). They are comfy for sure and I wear them year round. I just wish they actually covered around my knee laterally more like some of the newer pads do. Some of it has to do with the sastech pad is really stiff and firm so its hard to get any ergonomics out of it. Being that they aren't super minimal, I'd want more protection there. The elastic material is also entirely shredded. They still work and I would definitely NOT want any knee pads made with stupid neoprene material lol. You don't want a mini wetsuit around your knee. Even though these pads do breathe well, it is important to remember that the super long sleeve will never be quite as cool as a shorter sleeve. These pads cover so much of your leg that they are inherently just a bit warmer. A shorter sleeve with more exposed skin may be a better choice for warmer climates. Durability

Like the Sweet Protection pads listed above, the Sam Hill knee pads feature the same impact-absorbing SAS-TEC foam cup that stays flexible for pedaling comfort but hardens up upon impact. The removable pad provides plenty of protection over the knee and upper shin, and this pad is definitely one of the longest we've tested. Please call to get prior authorization before returning any item, regardless of reason, to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA). USG Inc. cannot accept returned merchandise without an RMA. Compared to Dainese's apparel, which tends to run small, the Trail Skins Air pads run big, especially around the upper cuff – I'd imagine most riders will need to go down a size. There's also the fact that the Pro-Shape protector didn't conform to my knees as well as the foam padding used on the other pads featured here. Plus, the weight of that rubber pad compared to the light mesh material that its sewn to means it's more likely to shift around. It all comes down to both the material of the sleeve and whether it features any perforation or other ventilation. Pads with more ventilation features will generally be more breathable, and therefore comfortable.I've worn the TLD Stage pads and they are nice but the material isn't as protective and they aren't any less warm than the these. HOWEVER they do wrap around your knee nicely unlike these.
