Sams was married three times. [4] He had two sons by his first wife, but the marriage broke down shortly before he was sent to prison. His second marriage also ended in divorce. He made the unsubstantiated claim that they had a consensual affair [13] and attempted to sue Slater for libel, [14] [5] but lost the case.
